CA: East Palo Alto cop killer should die, jury says

EAST PALO ALTO -- Alberto Alvarez should be put to death for murdering an East Palo Alto police officer nearly four years ago, a San Mateo County jury decided Tuesday.

The same jury of six men and six women convicted Alvarez, 26, last month of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of murdering a police officer.

On Tuesday, the jury chose death for the East Palo Alto resident rather than life in prison without parole. A judge will officially sentence Alvarez on Feb. 2.

"It was the verdict we were seeking because of the aggravating factors in the case - specifically, the heinous nature of the crime," said Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti.

Gasps could be heard when the verdict was announced in San Mateo County Superior Court in Redwood City, Guidotti said. "It's a severe outcome, and I think that takes the breath away of many people," she said.

Officer Richard May was slain after responded to a call about a fight at a University Avenue taqueria Jan. 7, 2006.

Alvarez had left the restaurant when May tried to stop him. Alvarez shot the officer twice in the chest and once in the shoulder, and May shot Alvarez once in the leg.

Alvarez then stood over the 38-year-old officer and shot him in the head.

"He could have fled," Guidotti said. "But he chose to fire execution-style. It was completely gratuitous."

Thank You, San Mateo DA's office. Prayers of support for the families and gratitude for the jurors and their decisions.

Too bad SF DA Kamela Harris wouldn't prosecute a cop killer or gangbanger and seek the death penalty, even for multiple murders and barbarous crimes.. and she wants to be State AG?

Yeah, the death of the cop was rather severe also.

Exactly —so different from San Francisco, where illegals in broad daylight can murder most of a whole family, and then get LET OFF..!

Why should it be any severer than a similar death of some Joe Blow citizen?

When was the last time California executed anyone?

I'm on the same page. Should be a death sentence be it a cop or a private Joe.

Simple, the life of one of our overlords in blue is more important than your life.

I thought the same thing but I think this is what did it.

Alvarez then stood over the 38-year-old officer and shot him in the head.

Believe it or not...California does occassionally executes murderers.
I was stunned when it happened during my stay in Los Angeles.
To a guy that had picked up, abused, then murdered a number of young
males.

These days, the California authorities might give him a medal for
promoting “gay rights”...
Oh, and “Diversity”.
