Boeing's X-51A WaveRider a jet-fueled, air-breathing hypersonic rocket is one step closer to reality.
In tests over Edwards Air Force Base in California, a B-52 bomber carried the X-51A WaveRider aloft for the first time, announced manufacturer Boeing Corp. The test was a key milestone in preparation for the X-51A to light its supersonic "ramjet" engine and propel the WaverRider at hypersonic speed for about 5 minutes, before plunging into the Pacific Ocean

I thought it was scramjet, not ramjet. Haven't we had ramjets forever?

That is one reason (of many) why nobody would ever put me in charge of a project like the "Waverider."
I would have insisted on calling it "Spaceball 1."
Another reason is that I got D's in EE, failed Thermodynamics once, and got another D in Material Science.

Blackbird is good for Mach 3.5+ .
As much as I admire that beautiful plane, I don’t thing there’s another Mach 1.5 hiding in the plus sign...

Eh, make that Mach 3.2+ . Even harder to squeeze another Mach 1.8 out of the plus....

...the X-51A to light its supersonic "ramjet" engine and propel the WaverRider at hypersonic speed for about 5 minutes, before plunging into the Pacific Ocean. This last little detail may impact the commercial application of this aircraft.

I thought it was scramjet, not ramjet. Haven't we had ramjets forever? Yes, but "SCramjet" stands for "supersonic combustion ramjet". So a scramjet is a type of ramjet. In a "regular" ramjet, the air is slowed to subsonic speed, and the combustion takes place at those speeds. But as the term implies, this is not true for a scramjet. The trick appears to be keeping the fire lit.

But a way to go! ( : >)Hmm...maybe they could get MTV to sponsor some flights and they could incorporate it into episodes of Jackass.
