The expansive asphalt parking lot in Fair Lakes Shopping Center in Fairfax Virginia was full and there wasn't a single Prius in sight. This is SUV territory and the campaign sticker on the back window of one big Ford summed up the mood: a play on the Obama campaign mantra of hope, this one said simply - "Nope".
There are not too many Obama fans in Fairfax but there are hundreds of people prepared to line up for hours in the snow for a chance to meet the one political figure they believe might still be able to rescue the nation from "socialised medicine", "Liberal intellectuals" and "elitist" newspapers like the New York Times.
Sarah Palin's book Going Rogue is the publishing sensation of the moment here.

Fire up the conservative ladies.
Sarah has my vote. My In-laws, parents, wife, and sisters as well. That’s 8. I’m sure we aren’t alone.
Do you want a surgeon, or a defense attorney or an accountant "who speaks like an average American"? Or, would you prefer to have someone who speaks much more eloquently and persuasively than the average American, especially considering how critical effective communication skills are in that job? I don't want an average American running the country. I want an exceptional American with exceptional skills and extraordinary abilities at the helm, especially while in stormy seas. I suspect I won't be alone in 2012.
We had a guy for eight years who couldn't get out of his own way in front of the camera. It worked out horribly for us. Let's not repeat that same mistake.
What a load of rubbish!
Now why don't you show me ANY poll, which had Dan Quayle running neck and neck with the sitting president at th time, like Sarah Palin is currently running neck and neck with 0bama in the polls?
While you are about it, perhaps you will show me even one example of thousands of people, lining up in town after town, in sub-zero temperatures, all night, just to see Dan Quayle and have him sign his book.
Why do you insist on pushing this loony left garbage on his site?
The log cabin wing of the GOP is tumescent over the RINO Romney.
It scares the hell out of them that a woman with bigger fuzzies than they have has shown up on the scene who talks straight and gives no quarter.
If the GOP is going to push another RINO to the front of the line, then they might as well not bother running and let the current surrender monkey have another four years.
Yes, and Obama is leading the Dems to defeat.
Of course it’s rubbish. Consider the source.
Hilary, sure. Rudy, no way. I never believed that Rudy - with all his personal baggage and his anti-gun & pro-abortion record - would come remotely close to winning the nomination.
But, I agree with the premise of your question, which is why I believe the nominee won't be the three most visible candidates today - Palin, Huckabee or Romney.
NO!
Michele Bachmann on the other hand..Yes
We have a guy who has been hailed by the State Run Media as the “greatest orator ever” sitting in the White House right now, and how is he turning out for ya?
0bama is by far the biggest disaster ever to have hit this country, far worse than the 9/11 disaster. By the time this criminal 0bama is through, it's going to be near impossible to put the country back together. That's what voting for an empty suite who is "eloquent" and "persuasive" will get ya.
I like her but she has some explaining to do about her resignation motivation/strange resignation speech. Also, after eight years of a nonarticulate non conservative (W. Bush), I suggest a solid conservative with oratory skills. Of course, I have zero ideas as to who that might be. I don’t think Pawlenty, Romney, Gingrich, or Huckabee are it. We’ll also need someone who can deliver states like New Mexico, New Hampshire, and Colorado.
It's delusional to believe that Palin doesn't face a strong headwind. The fact of the matter is while she's incredibly popular with the base, especially social conservatives, she does have a "Dan Quayle" problem with the general electorate.
For a Republican to win back the White House from Obama, they're going to have to do better with independents and moderates than they have ever done in the past. This is because the blacks and the Hispanics won't abandon Obama. Whomever is the nominee, including Palin, will have to be polling north of 58% of Independents to beat Obama. It's a function of mathematics, nothing else.
“As difficult as it is for some to admit, the establishment doesn’t select the party nominee. The voters do that.”
No, they don’t. I would have voted for Romney last time, but he wasn’t on the ticket by the time it got to Mississippi. A few states make the choice. The system is flawed. Big time.
I could care less how a President speaks, it is what he says that matters. It is if he is honest and moral that matters. Smooth talk got us the Communist in the White House. He speaks well but he lies everytime he opens his mouth. Much rather someone who speaks the truth and walks the walk. I think most Americans would agree.
Are you kidding? Obama is toast! He won’t even be able to take the Democratic nomination.
No doubt Palin has been damaged by the media, but in 3 years ~ if BO is even still the president ~ the American public will be begging for anybody who is NOT Barack Obama!!
Seriously, can you imagine a debate between Palin and Obama?? The country may actually be broke by November 2011. What will Obama say when the questions aren’t offered by hack plants?
How can the media run the spin cycle about the economy getting better when we’re all unemployed?? When the military has been badly damaged by Obama’s policies? What if there is another terrorist attack on our soil and it is worse than Ft. Hood? Seems plausible in the next 3 years.
I’ll tell you right now, I’d vote for Romney, Huckabee,... heck, I’d even vote for Tim Pawlenty, if he were running against Obama.
Hopefully it don’t come that. I hope the traitor and his minions are removed from office.
If Palin is so damaged that her ability to be elected cost us the presidency in 2012, I have little doubt that she would be the first person to take herself out of the race.
As of now, I like Mike Pence, I like Bachmann and I like Palin ~ and I like any of their chances in a campaign against Barack Hussien Obama.
That is the $64,000 question, is it not?
Of course she can. No one energizes Republican voters like Sarah Palin does, plus she is now running 50/50 amongst independents. That's all she would need to win.
After this healthcare abomination, 0bama is finished for 2012 anyway.
Have you ever heard the phrase, don't count your chickens before they hatch? Even after the wave of Republican resurgence in '94 and approval rating in the 30s, Clinton was EASILY reelected precisely because he was persuasive and eloquent.
Effective extemporaneous communication skills are never a bad thing in a presidential candidate.
How about leading Americans to victory as the head of a Conservative third party?
