It was the slap heard 'round the coalfields: Cordelia Ruth Tucker, wearing the fluorescent-striped shirt of a miner, strode past West Virginia state troopers and into a stream of marchers protesting mountaintop removal mining to deliver an audible smack.

There have been nearly 100 arrests in 20 protests, most involving trespassing. Led by a new group called Climate Ground Zero, the activists have chained themselves to giant dump trucks, scaled 80-foot trees to stop blasting and paddled into a 9 million-gallon sludge pond. They've blocked roads, hung banners and staged sit-ins.
Virginia-based Massey Energy claims a single 3 1/2-hour occupation at Progress Coal Co. in Twilight cost the company $300,000.

Massey equates anti-coal with anti-American. Pittsburgh-based Consol Energy blames the planned layoffs of 482 miners on a lawsuit by the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition.
Activist Chuck Nelson, a former underground miner from Glen Daniel, said the longer surface miners face uncertainty, the more the danger grows: The federal government must act soon, one way or the other.
And if the EPA comes down on the environmentalists' side?
"Well," Nelson said, "there's a possibility it might not be safe to live in the Coal River Valley."

The “R” party has missed a lot of opportunities to grow in WV. They run the most sissyfied people imaginable. Byrd has kept his office by bringing home the “pork” and Rocky bought his way into office and continues to do so. He’s crooked as a snake.
The upper western "finger" of WV has suffered so much from the closing of the steel mills. The dumbest move in history. At my age, I can look around and see what the democrats have done to this state and it makes me cry. You have to say one thing about R. Byrd. If it were not for him WV would still have no roads, and even so, we still have the worst roads in the country. But WV has seen more upheaval and tragedy than any place I know and they still hang tough. They are not broken.
One word: Gitmo.
I see these sentiments a lot and it worries me. When push comes to shove we won't win by being 'holier that thou,' only by being tougher and - probably - more ruthless than our adversaries, whether thet're environmentalists or liberals or muslims. I believe it was John McGraw who said "nice guys finish last." I may not finish first but I damned sure don't plan on being last either.
Remember, he who beats his sword into a plowshare will plow for him who didn't.
Their union sent out representatives to convince a lot of people to vote for Obama. The article headline from their paper was very jubilant about how sucessful they were. The union members need to clean house of their officials. The attack upon them by the greens should be their wakeup call.
When their is a democrat president the enviro-nazis are let loose. Their union knew that and still threw them under the bus.
Few have stuck it as hard to WV as the Rockefeller family. It amazes me he won in the first place.
I’d love to see the donor list for iLoveMountains and AppalachianVoices. I’d bet even money that some are Jay’s children, embarrassed in front of their New York and Washington friends because their dad represents WV.
Murder is a legal term. “Acceptable” isn’t a legal term, but a moral one - at least I’m thinking that’s how you intend it.
Morally, yes, of course murder can be acceptable. Illegal but morally “acceptable.” The guys who tried to kill Hitler attempted murder - but in my opinion it was certainly “acceptable.” Do you disagree?
Hank
Murder is the literal translation of #10. In the line of defense or preservation it is not addressed.
I hope that is understood.
You can’t eat trees. Hug them, maybe, but having them for dinner. Nope.
Let the revolution begin!
Good point. UMWA scum deserve to lose everything. They are no better than the eco goons.
the left will be appeased when the coal is mined by illegals and sent to China, not burned in the USA
where are the unions on this? still collecting dues from miners?
That’s what I was thinking.
My grandfather was a mine inspector back in the 30-60’s. He was called in to investigate and inspect mines after an accident/disaster.
He had stories to tell! IIRC he wrote a book about his experiences. I will have to ask my mother about that, but I sort of remember him showing us a copy when it was first published.
Yes, murder in defense of one’s livelihood and moral way of life is acceptable. When a group, with backing by government, wages economic war on another group and threatens their peaceful existence they put themselves at risk of a justified violent response.
I would love to know the name, I enjoy reading
auto-biographies of not so famous individuals.
They often times reveal much more about the
happenings of the day and peoples reaction to them.
I did a cursory look for it online, but didn’t find it. I will ask my mother when I see her this week.
I remember him talking about “standing” between the Coal CO and miners many times while he looked for the truth surrounding the incident that made his presence necessary.
As soon as you are capable of equating an envirowacko in WV with Hitler go for it!
You have taken a particular sentence from a reply, removed it from its context, and applied all kinds of your own ideas to what it meant.
You also seem to have drawn conclusions about me and what I advocate that are not at all accurate.
Frankly, those of you who can argue that killing the WV enviro-loons is justified based on such limited information are either self deluded or actually messed up in the head. You are the warped equivalent of a monday morning quarterback who, at best, listened to the game on the radio.
For all of you who BELIEVE SO STRIDENTLY that this is the proper thing to do: get your weapons of choice, get into your car, drive to WV and go take some of them out.
Please don’t post to me again until you get back, or from jail. Either on will be fine. Drive safely!
