LONDON The only passenger rail link between Britain and the rest of Europe has been shut down indefinitely, Eurostar said Sunday, promising more travel misery for thousands of stranded passengers just before Christmas.
Services have been suspended since late Friday, when a series of glitches stranded five trains inside the Channel Tunnel and trapped more than 2,000 passengers for hours in stuffy and claustrophobic conditions. More than 55,000 passengers overall have been affected.

Yet we should invest billions of dollars into trains..
“The engineers on board have recommended strongly that, in light of further snowfalls that are happening tonight, we make some modifications to the trains on snow shields to stop snow being ingested into the power car,” he told the BBC.”
I understand the trains come out of the tunnels, but this seems like a very odd problem for them to encounter.
Why high speed rails in America is a bad idea...
I too wonder if the “official” story is just a cover, and the real problem is some kind of terror threat.
(pure speculation)
I was doing the London Paris train when it got shut down last year due to some problem. What a nightmare..and that was only a short suspension. I can’t imagine what it will be like with an “indefinite suspension”. They told people who were relying on the service that they were working hard to get it going again.
This one sounds like a cover story.
For those who don't know, the UK press has decided that Muslims, Pakistanis, etc. are now "Asians".

Do they still have transchannel ferry service. I remember seeing the hydroplane âlandâ in Dover, a truly amazing sight. BTW, I think the hydroplane ferry and the chunnel are both superb engineering feats.
I’m in London right now. My in-laws were taking the train on Wednesday to visit us for Christmas. I’m sure glad this happened before they got on it. I would have hated for them to get stuck in the Chunnel for hours, but it stinks that they
probably won’t be able to come for Christmas now.
Union problems?
This usage of the word "asian" in Britain to refer to people from South Asia (including Indians and Pakistanis) goes back many decades, does not refer specifically to Muslims. and as far as I know, did not originate with the press.
It probably is related to the fact that for historical reasons, south asians in Britain greatly outnumber east asians.
As an example, in 1972, Idi Amin expelled Indians living in Uganda. But British headlines at the time said that he was expelling "asians".
The trains ran great for 15 years or so without an incident such as this, right? So freak weather caused problems. They will deal with it and move on.
By the way, I am a member of the “Mile Low” club ... you can guess based on context what that means ... :)
Paging Miss Taggert, please pick up the white courtesy phone...
I’m guessing you’re a British Submariner cabin boy.
Look, over 30 thousand people were effected, and 2000 people were trapped, yet nodescription was given as to why the trains stalled inside the chunnel, where it obviously was NOT snowing. WHY? Anyone readinng this and thinking it tells the whole story has got to be brain dead. Why were the trains stalled inside the chunnel where it WAS NOT snowing, due to snow elsewhere? Couldn't the trains have been moved out chunnel, and then put on a lay by set of rails? wHAT IS MISSING HERE?
Our nightly ‘news’ service says the problem was caused by the sudden difference in temperature, it was something like -20 outside of the tunnel, and 25 inside. Condensation resulted, electrical equipment failed...
Believe it or not? I have no idea...
Eurostar cancels Chunnel trains after 2,500 trapped Date: 20 December 2009
By Hazel Mollison
EUROSTAR has cancelled all its services for today as the company strives to avoid a repeat of the chaos that saw thousands of passengers trapped in the Channel Tunnel in freezing conditions for up to 13 hours.
A spokesman said it would run test trains to get to the bottom of the problems that caused widespread disruption but would not run services.
Last night, another Eurostar train from Paris to London, carrying 750 passengers, broke down after it came out of the tunnel on the UK side. Another train was dispatched to take the passengers to their destination.
The company has promised a “proper and full inquiry” after 2,500 passengers were trapped in the tunnel on Friday night. Four trains broke down due to severe temperature fluctuations and passengers have been promised compensation.
Meanwhile, road and air passengers in Scotland face further disruption with up to six inches of snow predicted to fall on the highest areas tonight. Several main roads were closed yesterday following blizzards, while police and ambulance crews dealt with dozens of road accidents around the country.
Forecasters have warned that temperatures could fall as low as 13C in the run-up to Christmas.
Braemar in Aberdeenshire is expected to experience the lowest temperature on Tuesday night.
In the Eurotunnel incident, passengers were trapped for up to 13 hours after trains between London and Paris broke down. Angry travellers arriving in London yesterday morning said they had been left in the tunnel with no power, air conditioning, food or water.
The breakdowns occurred when the high-speed trains moved from cold outside temperatures in northern France into the warmer tunnel.
A rescue locomotive and a shuttle train were used to move passengers out of the 32-mile tunnel.
“We’re very sorry that they’ve had such a disrupted journey,” Richard Brown, Eurostar’s chief executive said. “We’ve been getting people home as quickly as we can but they have had very bad journeys.”
Heavy snowfalls also caused chaos for air travellers yesterday. Gatwick and Luton Airports were closed for hours, while budget airline easyJet said it had cancelled many of its flights.
Met Office spokesman Ian Robinson said the freezing spell would last until Christmas Eve, adding: “It is still too difficult to say what will happen on Christmas Day.”

Could it be that the Hopenchangen press can’t broach the political correctness barrier to truly report the problem in full , a temperature difference between the below zero external temperatures and non global warming snow fall versus the warm chunnel temperatures as the cause of the breakdowns?
At least the Scots have the truth in print.
