Reid is trying to do cram through, he has his 60. But what if, that is the question. There is a special election in Massachusetts on 01/19/2010. What if their internals are so bad that a Republican has a chance to win Teddy Kennedy's seat? What if Scott Brown actually wins in Massachusetts? Tangential to this is the age and health of Senator Byrd. These are two risks that could delay their 60 vote fillibuster proof majority. One by going back to 59 if Brown wins, and the other is all the issues that would occur if Byrd's health failed or worse, note we wish him well, but at 95 if my memory is correct, he has been in better health. I look forward to Freepers' thoughts on this.
It is true that Kennedy will draw some base away from Brown but most Democratic Massachusetts voters are so stupid that they will vote for Joseph Kennedy, thinking he's related to the same Joseph Kennedy that used to bootleg liquor and screw showgirls. So Kennedy's candidacy will probably be a wash.
I live in MA. There’s no way to really tell how big Brown’s support is. I wouldn’t trust any poll from the globe or herald. However, I think, even if he loses, it will not be by the 70-30 margin that Kennedy used to get. I attended the tea party rallies in July, and was surprised at the number of people there. With our feckless governor, a corrupt legislature, tax increases, threats of toll increases, and an upset populace, Brown just may be able to pull out a victory.
It’s telling in itself that Coakley won’t debate him, which would elevate his stature. We’ll see. If Brown wins, that would be a blow to the democrats and a foretelling of November.
Where is this mytical person getting Scott on all national talk shows?
As the late David Brudnoi used to say the "Stupid Party"......
My thoughts exactly...
Where is Dick Morris on this? Frank Lutz? Michael Barone?
They should be all over it IMHO...
Brown won’t be allowed to win.
This is MA and our ruling plutocrats cannot afford to give up the facade of legitimacy they derive from a voting majority in our national Politburo.
If they are fearless enough to actually ram something like this unConstitutional abomination down our throats in full view, what makes you think they won’t tamper with voting results behind the scenes?
We’ll never have am honest election again. The Constitution has been overthrown and the coup d’etat is pretty much complete.
Folks, I fear we’re going to see a war in this country during our lifetimes.
Hey, in the last ten years, MA has elected GOP Govs. Why not a Senator.
Sam, I see your point. If he doesn’t run an aggressive campaign, or hasn’t to date, he’s probably cooked.
If he’s not, he should be. I live about 30 miles outside Boston and I see more Brown the Croak-me signs in yards by about a 2 to 1 margin. I have yet to see a Croak-me bumper sticker but have seen dozens of Brown bumper stickers. Polling shows Croak-me could lost to either of these candidates too: Anybody but Martha and None of the Above.
I’d love to see it happen, but I think the best chances are with a state with a GOP governor (or about to have one) and an ailing, aged, enfeebled Democratic Senator. Byrd is no good, WV has a Democratic Governor. New Jersey, depending on the inauguration date, will have a GOP Governor, and Frank Lautenberg has sounded to me like he cannot be a sure bet to make it to the vote - supposedly at or near the State of the Union address. Anyone want to handicap other states?
“What are you hearing on the street? Does Brown have a shot?”
I think he does, most of the college aged Dems will vote for Coakley like lemming to the sea, but most of the traditional Dems especially the elderly are concerned about Medicare / Medicaid being cut, so if he plays that angle one never knows.
Scoundrels one and all the dominate media. Thanks.
Spark, I think you are spot on.... IMHO if Brown runs against Obamacare, ONE ISSUE and what it will do to seniors in MA, and what Masscare has done, he will have Miss Coakley borrowing some of Leahy's Depends....
Won’t matter....Lib’s can count on Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Lindsay Graham, etc., to cross over and vote with them whenever they need it. Just hand them a few more millions of dollars of taxpayer money for their States, and they fold like a cheap suit......
Snowe and Collins already have universal health care in Maine. It has bankrupt the state. If the federal health care bill passes, Maine will get more assistance from the rest of the country. Of course, they will vote for the final bill. Plan on it.
What a sorry state Massachusetts is. It was one of the leading states fighting for liberty at the founding of the republic. Today it is first among those lined up to deny liberty to all.
Some group needs to establish daily surveillance of Robert Byrd. In other words, we need eyes, on a daily basis, to verify that he is actually alive and conscious.
I expect that Brown would get shellacked no matter what, but the fact that the election is merely a special election for only this race would seem to benefit Brown: it means you can expect the most mobilized voters, who are certainly opposed to the Obama deathcare bill. Even the unions don’t like it.
