To sway Nelson, a hard-won compromise on abortion issue
Washington Post ^ | 12.20.09 | Paul Kane

At one end of the majority leader's office, Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), the antiabortion senator whose support was crucial to health-care legislation, huddled with White House staff in a conference room. At the other end, Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the chamber's leading advocates of abortion rights, hunkered as far from Nelson as possible, in the office of Reid's chief of staff.

Shuttling between the two parties Friday afternoon and evening were Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.). Desperately trying to find a compromise, Schumer put his head in his hands early Friday afternoon. "What are we going to do?" he asked Reid.

But by 10:30 p.m. Friday, a handshake deal sealed a hard-won compromise over abortion. Within minutes senators were on the phone with Obama, who was flying aboard Air Force One, having just forged his compromise with world leaders on global warming, according to senators and aides who participated in the negotiations. "We did it, Mr. President," Reid told Obama.

Again, make sure the Russians know to review their targeting lists regularly and make sure to keep Omaha, Lincoln and other spots in Nebraska ON THE LISTS.

LOL. I don't even have to read this crap to know that it is BS.

I don't get how any modern Democrat can be described as "pro-life." When it comes to murdering babies, that will ALWAYS be their first priority.

A handshake?

From a politician?

I don’t know about anyone else, but I wouldn’t trust a handshake from any politician.

Or even trust Harry Reid saying he got a handshake.

Nelson got one hell of a deal on Medicare and abortion. The liberals will be fuming about it over the holidays. Let's see if Obama, Reid and Pelosi can keep them on board!

Nelson is now a pro-abortion senator, in favor of killing babies for Obama.

How can a Godly nation be led by these murderers?

Why were there not any Republican Senators at the table? The Republicans had the Dems into such meetings frequently during the Bush era......oooooops ,,,, I forgot.......Obama is a bipartisan president.

The way this is written you would think Paul Kane wrote this with tears of joy in his eyes wishing he could have been there to hug everyone.

Media is trying to make this disgracful corrupt deal sound like clever bargaining.

A Congress that will pass a national bill and exempt one state from the costs as a payoff is despicable.

It ought to be unonstitutional and Nelson should be tarred and feathered.

Judas Nelson folded like a cheap suit.

Sen. Nelson doesn't even deserve to lick Judas' shoes. After all, even Judas regretted what he did in the end.

Why were there not any Republican Senators at the table?

This one of biggest scandals in politics today.

Prior to 1994, House Republicans were routinely locked-out of the committee room when a bill was being marked-up.

One of the things that Newt did to reform the process was to insure that all committee meetings were open to members from the minority party. He stood by his word -- and the policy continued through 2006.

But, upon seizing power in 2006, Nancy Pelosi immediately reversed the policy and returned to the pre-1994 process -- locking-out the minority.

The "Moderates", who often bemoan the lack of bi-partisanship, don't know a damn thing about what a.) Newt did or b.) what Pelosi is doing. And it's a disgrace.
