Washington area prepares for biggest snowfall in six years (Greatest accumulation in 70 years)
The Washington Post ^ | Friday, December 18, 2009 | Michael E. Ruane and Hamil R. Harris

A major storm was expected to bury the Washington region Saturday with what forecasters said could be the largest snowfall to hit the area in six years and the greatest December accumulation in more than 70 years.

Accumulations of 15 inches or more in the city and up to 24 inches in parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains were possible, according to the National Weather Service. The snow was expected to cause significant disruptions for shoppers, travelers and revelers on the last weekend -- and biggest shopping day -- before Christmas.

Especially large amounts of snow could accumulate southeast of the Interstate 95 corridor, where "paralyzing" near-blizzard conditions could occur, said AccuWeather.com chief meteorologist Joe Bastardi.

Snow was expected to start falling early Saturday and to increase in intensity all day, as bands of precipitation, fed by moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and driven by a cold northeast wind, sweep over the area.

Temperatures will remain in the 20s and low 30s, aggravated by gusty winds of 20 to 25 mph, the Weather Service said. The snow was not expected to taper off until Sunday morning.

Severe highway, rail and air travel disruptions were anticipated. Some airlines were canceling flights Friday, and authorities urged people to stay off the roads. Southwest Airlines said it was allowing customers using six East Coast airports to rebook tickets without penalties.

A state of emergency was declared in Virginia, where the National Guard was on alert to help with emergency transportation. In the District, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) declared a snow emergency, effective at 7 a.m. Saturday. All vehicles must be removed from the city's snow routes or they will be ticketed and towed.

Thats nothing compared to what we just had in Alaska, at least 2 feet at my house and almost 6 feet not too far south of me.

Are we shut down?

NOPE, matter of fact business is booming, every redneck with a plow in the state has a job, snowmachine shops are working overtime, and maybe for a long time we may actually have the restart of the Iditarod here in Wasilla.

People fail to see the silver lining in the dark clouds.

The snow will gridlock DC and not only make it hard for the Senators to get to work, but the staffers too.

With any luck, there will be ice buildup on the powerlines and they’ll lose electricity in the Capitol Bldg.

he he

Good you’re all stocked up and can just stay in and watch the snow/sleet come down.

I don’t mind driving in snow - (light snow...) but try to never drive when the sleet/freezing rain falls. That’s what we usually get here if anything frozen falls....though I remember a snow of about 16 inches a few years back..maybe 10 years ago....LOL.

Growing up here, we had many Christmases where it was warm to be outside without jackets.

Any snows we got happened in Jan or Feb, not in Dec....

Are your forecasters saying you may get snow on Christmas day?

The Weather Channel has a snow flake on their 10 day forecast for here for Christmas day (possible flurries).

THAT would be a shocker.

2 feet of snow!!!

Now THAT would cripple us.

But am glad it’s good for business there and hats off to the people of Wasilla! You’ve got the “right stuff”, that’s for sure!

That’s why I live in a “cabin” by the river (South fork of Shenandoah). I don’t need that ton of snow, but I can enjoy it by the fire. The same snow in the city causes chaos.

Ever since Al Gore has been talking about global warming, we've been getting snow, often.

LOL!

Two feet of snow may be a lot to a lot of people I admit, I have lived in the Sierra Mountains at Lake Tahoe where they have seen 5-10 feet snowfalls but there is some pretty advanced snow removal equipment there and they can clear the roads in hours. In my state its almost a requirement to have a snowblower like I do and 4WD vehicles WITH snow tires, and yes indeed just about any truck or contraption with 4wd around here including ATVs people will use as a snowplow and they head out like a well taught army and hit all the businesses and they get well payed.

I even saw a Subaru once with a homemade plow! Frankly I am glad for snow and one of these days I will get a decent snowmachine, right now I’m into motorcycles and I just bought a new Yamaha, obviously it will wait till spring.

Our snow around here is dry and crystal like and its easy to drive through, its like cotton candy, I’ve seen wet stuff in Illinois that would give credit to concrete so all of you in the lower 48 have my sympathy in that regards, 2 feet here in the last couple of days has not really hurt us and like I said earlier is a jumpstart for our winter time economy.

Hey - check out this post on WRAL (in their Golo comments section under the story that says Raleigh-Durham is now going to get just all rain overnight tonight)

(not so in other parts of the state - read this)

“My son and 4 other kids with Job Corps has been at the Asheville Airport since 5am today and are stranded. The restaurants in the airport have no food,US Air refuses to take these young folks to a hotel and no one can get to the airport from Occonaluftee to take these kids back to the center. I’ve called repeatedly to US Air and can’t talk to a live person. I’ve called Airport Authority and they don’t answer. With the price of airfares, this is outrageous! Job Corps spends millions of dollars to fly these young people back and forth while they are in this program and the airlines should be more appreciative!”

I have some comments - but I’ll wait to see how others respond who might read this little ditty...

Many who have prayed for God to send our Political leaders a message have had their prayers answered. However, the current aethists and agnostics that run our government can’t be bothered with signs from the almighty.

Oh - that’s the kind of snow I like - dry snow. Not the wet chunky kind.

Yep, guess that motorcycle will have to wait for spring...

Hope you stay warm in all that snow!
