(US Rep.) Wittman faces harsh crowd in Montross ["Tea Partiers"/"Birthers"]
The Northern Neck News ^ | December 16, 2009 | Alex J. Berkman

Rob Wittman was 40 minutes late to his town hall meeting in Montross on Dec. 8, where he received less than the hometown treatment from TEA Party members.

Held at Washington and Lee High School, the town hall meeting, sponsored by the Westmoreland County Citizens Association, was the public's opportunity to question Wittman on everything the actions of Congress and federal government.

While many questions posed to Wittman, first congressional district representative, dealt with health care and the economy, the show was quickly stolen by TEA Party members.

Catherine Crabill, former Republican candidate for the 99th district seat in Virginia's House of Delegates, read aloud a self-transcribed segment from Glenn Beck's program on Fox News.

The segment, according to her transcription, featured two politicians admitting that health care was not a constitutional right. Therefore, a vote on health care goes against the congressional oath of office and is treasonous to the United States Constitution, Crabill said.

"Do you intend to uphold your oath of office?," Crabill asked Wittman, garneringa round of applause.

"Yes, I will uphold my oath of office," Wittman answered, adding that he intends to see the health care bill process through to the end.

Audience members were given the opportunity to ask questions by placing their name in a bowl near the door to the cafeteria, where the meeting was held. Names were then chosen at random by Kennon Morris, president of the WCCA.

Mark Carpenter, another TEA Party member, expressed extreme contempt of the Obama administration and taxation when given the chance to speak.

"When people fear government you have tyranny. When the government fears the people you have freedom," Carpenter said. "We have a federal government that is, pardon my language, gang-raping the people."

Carpenter went on to say that the growth of the federal government is leading to the point where people will have to resort to violence.

"I have never seen folks so upset," Wittman responded.

Following other audience members' questions, many of which regarded health care reform, Carpenter took the floor again, to continue attacks against the current administration.

"The usurper we have in the White House has not proven he is qualified to be there," Carpenter said, speaking about President Barack Obama's contested birthplace.

The documentation of Obama's birthplace that has been presented to the public is valid, though, Wittman responded.

As Wittman pointed out his position on Obama's contested birthplace, often referred to as the "Birther Movement," another TEA Party member in the audience presented the representative with a manila envelope.

Inside the envelope were documents, which the woman said were from American Grand Jury, an anti-Obama organization, that supposedly gave proof of the president's false citizenship.

According to AmericanGrandJury.org's article "Obama's birth certificate: a pure fraud," the administration's "propraganda (sic) machine" displayed a doctored birth certificate presented to the public.

"The issue here is not if the [birth certificate] can be used to prove natural born citizenship status - it is that a President (and numerous accomplices) committed felony document fraud in creating this false identification document, in violation of Federal and State laws," American Grand Jury's Web site asserts.

Wittman himself also found himself in the TEA Party's crosshairs during the meeting --for his choice to not campaign with and support Catherine Crabill in the November election for the House of Delegates.

"You chose to abandon the 99th district by not supporting our candidate," said another woman in the crowd. "I speak for many when I ask why?"

Wittman, who represented the 99th district from 2005 to 2007, would not provide a detailed answer, opting to revert to the stance he took during the Crabill's campaign.

"My simple answer is I chose to endorse Catherine [Crabill]," Wittman answered.

"I'm going to refer you to Revelations three, verses 14 and 15," the Crabill's supporter said before walking out of the meeting.

The verse reads: "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. I know your deed, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!"

It would be nice to have the STATE mentioned in the title, maybe in parentheses? Not everyone knows who Wittman is just from a headline.

Fairly good voting record, he’s not been in Congress long, just 2 years, replacing the late Jo Ann Davis.

I don’t see why he should care what you guys think. Who cares if he’s s****ing on the constitution? It’s not like he’ll lose votes for it.

I’d wager a lot that most “birthers” will vote for him (or in fact any anti-constitution Republican) in ‘10 simply because he’s not a Democrat. Cue all the “lesser of two evils” and “wasting your vote” rationalisations ...

Whittman has his problems, but Catherine Crabill is not exactly the most stable person to challenge him.

Here's a Crabill quote from The Washington Times, April 1995:

Citizen militia groups in Montana, Florida and New Mexico say they condemn the bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City and charge that the federal government, not anyone in their movement, was likely responsible.

“If any militia group is truly responsible for the murderous bombing in Oklahoma City, then I say, ‘Hangin’s too good for ‘em,’ ” said Catherine Crabill of Aragon, N.M., who belongs to a group called New Mexico Citizens Action Association.

But Mrs. Crabill said it’s her belief “this heinous act of violence was the work of our government,” which will “use it as an excuse to aggressively attack the growing militia movement across the country.”

She has not (and I believe has said she will not) retracted that statement.

It seems to me, the operations have to be performed before big money will pay for their campaigns.
