Just plane rude: Sen. Charles Schumer refers to female flight attendant as the b-word
NY Daily News ^ | 12/16/09 | Michael Mcauliff

New York's famously garrulous senior senator, Chuck Schumer, got busted Wednesday for calling a female flight attendant the B-word aboard a US Airways flight from New York to Washington on Sunday.

Schumer was sitting next to protege Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, gabbing away on his phone, when a flight attendant told him to shut it down.

Schumer turned off his phone, and then argued with the attendant that he was allowed to talk while the cabin door is open. He lost.

Rules are rules.

Yet I agree with you. One of the dirtiest electronic/magnetic field environment in the world is an airport. And unless the windows on the plane are coated with a conductive see through film, don’t tell me the plane provides Faraday cage protection. Unless you’ve just fired up a 5000 watt generator inside the cockpit there had better be no interference. There is nothing a battery powered commercially available electronic device will interfere with unless is it breaking FCC requirements six ways to Sunday. If that were the case, planes would be falling out of the sky daily.

” the rule is for as long as the door is open.

There is no such rule. The only rule is a regulation that says electronic devices, except a few specifically mentioned items such as pacemakers and hearing aids, may be used only with permission of the operator of the aircraft. So long as the aircraft is powered up the operator (eg, the airlines) can say no cell phones at all, door or no door. There are electronic systems that need to be checked while at the gate and the airlines may desire no cell phones at that time.

The FCC has an additional rule that says no cell phones may be used in flight. So, once the wheels leave the ground, no cell phones.

There is also a regulation that states no one may interfere with the duties of a flight crew member including flight attendants. The pilot may request them to ensure cell phones are off.

Had one of those standing right behind me the post office yesterday. What a rude individual! Talking loud, smelled like he “drank” his lunch...disgusted me, and my look showed it as I stepped a few feet away from him. He seemed oblivious to those around him. Fool.

I think y’all owe the Grinch an apology. At least he saw the error of his ways. Chucky isn’t likely to have such an epiphany.

Sen Chuck U. Schumer, God's gift to mankind. And if God doesn't watch it He'll get an earful, too.

If I was this flight attendant’s husband I’d hunt him down and kick his ass. No lie.

The "as long as the cabin door is open" rule is arbitrary and inconsistent. Here's why:

1. The flight attendants tell the passengers that they must turn them off when the cabin door is closed.

2. The flight attendants tell the passengers that they may now use their cell phones as soon as the plane lands on the runway and is taxiing back to the terminal upon landing.

Therefore, I conclude that the "door is closed" policy is simply a convenient event to give the passengers time to turn off their phones and stow them as the plane taxis to the runway prior to take-off. It has no other bearing on safety, as use of the phone while taxiing upon landing confirms.

In Kinkos this week, I was using the copy machine and at the machine next to me was a woman, holding her purse in front of her. In her purse was her cell phone, which she had on loudspeaker. It was obvious that she was listening to a presentation via the phone.

I starting raising my voice, saying things like “what is that noise? Where is that noise coming from?” I was getting more loud with every question. She tried to ignore me. I went over to her and said in her face, I guess you can’t hear me because of ALL THE NOISE coming from your purse.

She replied, this is a long distance phone call.

I said I don’t care if it is long distance or from across the street. You are being rude. Turn it off, NOW. I don’t want to have to listen to that which I make my copies.

She relunctantly turned off her phone, and hurried out the door. The other customers smiled heavily.

Wow. That felt good.

Halcyon days.

Last time I experienced that I was on a flight from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.

On a propeller driven DC-6B!
