Golf is what I call a “skilled leisure activity”. You look at a pig like John Daly or a runt like Corey Pavin, and it’s quite arguable that golfers are not athletes.

If it’s an activity during which you can smoke and drink, does that qualify as a sport? Some people consider sex a sport, after all.

True, but you could make the same argument about baseball, based upon big, fat, superstars like Prince Fielder and David Ortiz and football, based upoon almost any offensive lineman.
I think there is legitimate debate as to whether golf should be considered a “sport” or “athletics”. It involves physical activity and skill is played competitively, so I’d class it as a sport.
