Impassioned parents demanded jail time for educators and district officials Saturday following the release of test scores that showed fourth- and eighth-graders had the worst math scores in the nation.
City students took the National Assessment of Educational Progress test this year, and 69 percent of fourth-graders scored below the basic level in math and 77 percent of eighth-graders scored below basic.
The Detroit scores on the progress test were the lowest in its 40-year history. The sample of students included 900 of Detroit's 6,000 fourth-graders and 1,000 of the district's 6,000 eighth-graders.
Sharlonda Buckman, CEO of the Detroit Parent Network, called for jailing and civil lawsuits against anyone in the city's educational system that is not doing his or her share to help properly educate children.
"Somebody needs to go to jail," she said in a tearful address to 500 parents gathered Saturday for the organization's annual breakfast forum. "Somebody needs to pay for this. Somebody needs to go to jail, and it shouldn't be the kids."
Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb told the crowd the test scores weren't the result of children who were incompetent or parents who didn't care. He blamed the scores on the district not doing its job.
Hey about the idiots who keep voting Democrat?
Unionized politically correct teachers and Democrat children.
It should be utopia.
And we can all rest assured that it is being well spent. (snicker)
Stop electing the same people to the school board. Stop requiring political correctness as the benchmark of success. Then maybe the test scores, and the hope for these children, would increase.

The courts have already ruled and it is well known that government schools are NOT legally liable if the kids learn nothing in school. Sort of like cops not being there to protect you from crime but to arrest the bad guy afterwards, maybe.
And the only problems that Detroit public schools have is low test scores?
Are there any other contributing factors to the low achievement of students in Detroit?
Or I should say, would it violate “political correctness” if we talk about some of the reasons that Detroit and so many big cities have lousy student achievement?
Anyone stupid enough to live in Detroit should wish for jail, probably an improvement.
Jail...lol. Failbama will give them a medal for insuring the next generation of dependants.
Agreed. And it should be the voters who make Detroit the MOST LIBERAL city in America.
those kids will mostly drop out and get on welfare before long.
I would venture to say that he may be quite incorrect on at least one of those two options. This does not exonerate the district from being culpable, expecially when they do not want to use red pens to grade with or spend more time telling Johnny that he should explore himself...
An increasing number of city officials seem to be headed there in Michigan. Why not teachers? Soon the entire government can be run from prison like the mafioso do.
Not defending the crappy skrool system, but did it ever occur to these parents that there’s a reason that their little hellions run wild in school and have no discipline, and that the reason has nothing to do with the school?
I am sure there is a judge somewhere who would order that every student be passed with A’s. Its in the Constitution somewhere, surely. Like ACORN funding.
What a mess the Democrats have made of Detroit!

Some of the parents should be jailed right along with the Teachers and Union Officials. People want to blame others, but they are as responsible for their kids education as anyone. I am often involved with my kids’ (public) school, and I see many parents who simply want to outsource not only education, but parenting, to the school.
...insuring the next generation of dependants.
That is the whole point of inner city school mediocrity! And it is deliberate. It has been that way for forty years in Newark, NJ.
