They may be anarchists but in Denmark even anarchy is organised

Considering he was tying my hands behind my back at the time, Henrik was surprisingly good company. “I like your laptop,” he said. “I want to put one of those on my — how do you say it — Christmas wish list.” He sat me in a line in front of an Italian anarchist and said, by way of goodbye: “I like London. Enjoy your stay in Copenhagen.” Henrik, a Danish riot policeman, had just arrested me.

For those climate change activists wondering how the Danish police would deal with a week of planned protests outside the UN climate change summit, the past weekend has been instructive. A 40,000-strong rally on Saturday ended with almost 1,000 protesters being corralled into a single area — a “kettle” — and detained. Only three were charged with an offence.

Yesterday’s planned blockade of Copenhagen’s docks faltered a kilometre from the port, with the arrest of several hundred protesters — as well as one Times journalist.

To many marchers, the only real surprise was why it had taken the police so long to act. The march had already been deemed illegal under Danish law, but as many as 1,000 activists were still allowed to cross a shopping street, and then chant their way past the United States Embassy (“Ah-ah-ah, anti-Kapitalister,” they sang).

(snip)

The protesters are in Copenhagen because they want to disrupt a summit that they consider ignores the real problem — the capitalist system — in favour of what many believe are false solutions, such as carbon trading. But they marched on the docks, specifically, because it was on their schedule. They may be anarchists but, in Denmark, even anarchy is organised.
