Taunton second-grader suspended over drawing of Jesus (Massachusetts)
The Taunton Daily Gazette ^ | Dec 14, 2009 | Gerry Tuoti, Staff Writer

A Taunton father is outraged after his 8-year-old son was sent home from school and required to undergo a psychological evaluation after drawing a stick-figure picture of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The father said he got a call earlier this month from Maxham Elementary School informing him that his son, a second-grade student, had created a violent drawing. The image in question depicted a crucified Jesus with Xs covering his eyes to signify that he had died on the cross. The boy wrote his name above the cross.

“As far as I’m concerned, they’re violating his religion,” the incredulous father said. He requested that his name and his son’s name be withheld from publication to protect the boy.

The student drew the picture shortly after taking a family trip to see the Christmas display at the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette, a Christian retreat site in Attleboro. He made the drawing in class after his teacher asked the children to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas, the father said.

“I think what happened is that because he put Xs in the eyes of Jesus, the teacher was alarmed and they told the parents they thought it was violent,” said Toni Saunders, an educational consultant with the Associated Advocacy Center.

Saunders is working with the boy’s parents after a mutual acquaintance referred them to her.

“When I got that call, I was so appalled that I had to do something,” Saunders said. “They weren’t looking at the fact that this is an 8-year-old child with special needs,” she added. “They made him leave school, and they recommended that a psychiatrist do an evaluation.”

Several years ago, my 8th grade son had just returned from a trip up north with Dad and uncles. They taught him to shoot several different types of guns. Interested in this new hobby, he announced he wanted to find a book on guns in the library. Mind you, he was a mainstreamed Asperger’s/ADHD child, with 1 hour of special ed class as support everyday in addition to his regular ed classes. At the following IED, his special ed teacher remarked how much this attention to guns concerned her, but no mention of the fact he was failing almost every class he was in!!! My decision to homeschool was made right then and there. He’s currently pursuing a degree in computer programming at a local college, no thanks to publik screwls!!!

[not bad for a jarhead...]

I have my days! But more importantly, I have tried to work “in the system” and the system SUCKS! I have been on school boards and their sub-committees and they are a waste of good tax money! Most public schools (89%+) are a waste of good tax money!

The system is about separating you from your money! Think about this:
Less kids in a school means less money from the state/feds, so they need more money to continue to operate!
More kids in a school means they need more money for space/teachers/supplies in order to continue to operate!
School has failing grades, they need more money to provide better books/curriculum/etc.. to keep operating!
School has passing grades, they need more money to expand those programs to more kids in the school!
They NEVER ask for less money - NEVER EVER!

The same for police departments, fire departments, etc...

A few years back, our local police department “down sized” due to people moving out of the city. They asked for a larger budget so that they could get better and more training for those “stretched” officers that were left on the force! The city started growing again, so guess what!?!?! The police dept now needs more money to hire more cops!

The system is BROKEN beyond repair! Let’s melt it down and start over!

Zero tolerance equals zero common sense. My son would be sent home every time they asked him to draw something. He is always drawing knights killing dragons or somebody shooting something.

He is eight years old and loves guns, swords, bows, knives, slingshots. He is getting an cowboy rifle that shoots pellets for Christmas from my dad, http://www.visionforum.com/search/productdetail.aspx?search=rifle&productid=97762 . I heard my dad playing with it last night while I was talking to my mom. Boys never grow up. :)

I does seen most teachers, such is the like, are in much need of therapy themselves.

Our educational systems have become everything but educational systems!

it’s this way everywhere...non Christians have torn Christianity from public school with a vengeance...even here in Frnaklin TN

and the kids of whom 99% are Christian at least by birthright are tired of the polemics.

it is sickening..

HOMESCHOOL YOUR CHILDREN!!! Where there is a WILL there is a WAY! Sacrifices must be made, but it is doable for EVERYONE — it’s all in the choices we make. I’ve heard of single parents who homeschool as well, so it’s not just for those of us lucky enough to have both parents in the home. You and your children may go “without” some things, but it is by far made up by the fact that you will be there for your children, they will KNOW you love them, and they will NOT be exposed to any of this propaganda going on in the schools.

My second choice would be private schooling if it can be afforded — again it’s all in the choices we make. Look into scholarships for private schooling as well - they ARE available, but not often advertised necessarily...

That’s the ONLY thing I can suggest to other parents at this point.

Psychological testing for drawing something so common within our society?? Words cannot express the sheer stupidity of all involved in suspending this child... Where is the ACLU - I know... don’t hold your breath!
