Speaker Pelosi named finalist for Time magazine 'Person of the Year' By Jordan Fabian - 12/14/09 05:21 PM ET
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is among the seven finalists chosen for Time magazine's annual "Person of the Year," according to media reports on Monday.
Other finalists in the realm of politics include last year's winner President Barack Obama, Afghanistan commanding Gen. Stanley McChrystal and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
"Look, she's the first woman Speaker of the House. She's the strongest Speaker of the House in decades," Time managing editor Richard Stengel said of Pelosi on NBC's "Today" show. "She had piloted what is probably the most important legislation in decades through the House. She's a really, really pivotal lawmaker."
Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Jamaican sprinter and Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt are also included as finalists.
Another finalist is the "Chinese worker," which the magazine said has become an influential international economic power.
The award is given to an individual who has achieved a notable accomplishment in the past year. Time's editors will name the winner on Wednesday.
Every U.S. president has won the award since Time launched the tradition in 1927, with the exceptions of Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover and Gerald Ford. President George W. Bush won it it 2000 and 2004 following both of his electoral victories.
Incredible, isn't it?
Well..., in reference to Hitler and Stalin being on the cover -- I say, "No, it's not incredible, it's quite appropriate."
In fact, if someone didn't pick Hitler and Stalin for the cover, I would wonder where that person had been "hiding out" at... LOL...
On what conceivable basis would Pelosi be nominated for this?
Ummmm..., you could start with... "Is Pelosi going to have any effect on your life in these United States?" ... LOL...
You got that right. Making sure the trains run on time votes run their way is, I think, their main purpose... ;0)
Pelosi will fit in well with the winners from 1938 & 1939.
Well, it’s Time’s choice, and Time’s rules. But if we’re going by Time’s rules, I question whether either the President or the Speaker belong on the list. And Usain Bolt? Great athlete, but one of the most influential persons of the year? Seriously?
She is lucky she made the finalist list. This is all she will get. I would not line a bird cage with TIME magazine.
I think it will be fun if she gets it and then Reid can’t get the Senate bill done. Woman of the Year FAIL!
They say, “Person of the Year”, but they mean, “Communist of the Year”.
Click on the name for a run-down for each one... :-)

What's a Time Magazine?
Does anyone still read that?
Jobs would be a dead man if Obamacare was the rule.
Jobs would be a dead man if Obamacare was the rule.
And Jobs would have been a dead man -- also -- if he had not passed "medical muster" on those lists about who gets the transplants first and who gets them later.
Jobs was just fortunate that his condition was serious enough to get him to the top of the list, without any preferential treatment (as the hospital affirmed in this case) -- so that he could get immediate attention.
And your point is?
And your point is?
His actual medical condition got him that transplant almost immediately...
If Pelosi is a strong lawmaker, exactly what significant legislation has she passed? That isn’t a rhetorical question. They control both houses and the presidency, and opposition to their health care scheme is so strong that they STILL can’t pass it.
And you think that would still be the case under Obamacare (along with things like a timely diagnosis)?

If you're at the head of the list without Obamacare, you're going to be in the same position with Obamacare. First is first, in either case... :-)
In Jobs' case, it doesn't make any difference either way. With others and with any kind of "rationing" of healthcare, then it would make a difference (to those others). But, as I said with Jobs' position (in line), if you're at the beginning of the line, you're there in either case...
