Back from combat, women struggle for acceptance
AP via Yahoo ^ | 14 Dec 2009 | KIMBERLY HEFLING

Nobody wants to buy them a beer.

Even near military bases, female veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan aren't often offered a drink on the house as a welcome home.

More than 230,000 American women have fought in those recent wars and at least 120 have died doing so, yet the public still doesn't completely understand their contributions on the modern battlefield.

For some, it's a lonely transition as they struggle to find their place.

“If you felt it was a danger to the “mission” why didn’t you speak up about it?”

because they already knew about it. your turn to answer some of my questions.

Just cause you say they already knew about it doesn’t mean they understood it was endangering the mission as you say. I never personalize other posters on FR. I try to limit it to the topic of the thread.

No one speaks up because people like you make their lives miserable and destroy careers as you pursue political correctness at the expense of others lives. YOU GET PEOPLE KILLED! Sad for us all that your kind are in power now - you and Pelosi and Obama and all the other man-haters.

well my line of work isn’t military but it is law enforcement and not speaking up means people get killed so i guess its all from your own frame of reference

I guess the definition of “in combat” needs further exploration. During the Revolutionary War women were indeed on the front lines as the front lines were among the “American’s” homes. Same as during the war of 1812 and the Civil War. My using the phrase, “in combat” was not meant to denote that they were military combat soldiers. The enemy does not and will not distinguish the difference between who is a combat soldier and who is not when on the front lines. It matters little what a person’s role is when the enemy is within sight of you.

It is immaterial to me whether or not you change your mind.

I am just grateful that you aren't calling the shots.

Those can can, do. Those who can't sit around and criticize those who can. LOL

So, would I be correct in understanding you’re still in/back in the sandbox?

I am home on a break until early 2010. I'm headed back to Baghdad initially, but there is a chance I will be going to the 'Stan sometime around spring.

If the enemy is so close to wiping us out that they are marching down our street, I will hand guns to my wife and daughters so they can defend themselves, you betcha—and my girls can shoot.

But that is a far cry from suiting them up and sending them to foreign lands to dodge bullets and bombs, to face men that would like nothing more than to rape and behead them. No thank you, I have my limits.

It’s hard enough to imagine sending a son into that horror. I couldn’t bear sending a daughter.

There are other reasons, but I’ll spare those who disagree with me enough already.

It is sexist, so what? I believe each sex has its advantages and disadvantages in life, so does mother nature, obviously.

“Like Kim Munley at Ft. Hood last month. She acquitted herself pretty well.”

But do recall, for accuracy, that it was her partner that took down the bad guy, not, as media hype had everyone belief, her. Not to diminish her actions, but PC-reporting is an insult to all.

PC reporting and PC awards diminish everyone. Who wants to be the best "..." in a particular endeavor? Shouldn't we all strive to be the best no matter what our ethnicity or sex???

How many women do you have to backup at the risk of your own life? Female cops stand around holding the handcuffs and using the Tazer and talking on the radio while the men to the dangerous part. Why don’t you speak up?

I’m certainly not going to disagree with your comment. I have daughters and grandaughters. I would not want them to face the horrors of combat either. On the other hand, if war is on my street, they too will fight back right along side me.

I don’t think it is “sexist” to acknowledge the differences between men and women. Nor is it, IMHO, “sexist” to want to keep women from confronting the horrors of war (I’d actually prefer that no one have to face those horrors, but understand that there are forces in the world that must be kept at bay). If there had been a way, I would have gone to Iraq in my son’s stead in order to spare him from what he experienced. But, then, that’s just me.

LOL - all of them? Even the nurses? Even the women who helped to reload muskets and carry ammo?

I’m not a cop. But I’ve seen women where I work step in between and stop people from assaulting each other and I’ve seen them be assaulted right along with the men who work with them.

Yeah, those 16 women killed in action in WWII won the war.

The failure of Nazi Germany to use German women in plants and support positions was a significant factor in their ability to continue the war. They instead brought in foreign slave labor, unmotivated to produce and highly motivated to sabotage whenever possible.

You’re saying that women in the military today are all hookers?

Sorry, I don’t believe it. The men did it, with women pretending to help.

Women, compared to men, have 45-50% less upper body strength and 25-30% less aerobic capacity, which is essential for endurance.

Look, I don’t want women in combat. It will never sit well with me.

But, things the way they are, you should know that I support you and every American fighter 100%.

Godspeed

You’re right, the women are probably not paid.
