HOUSTON The first openly gay person to be elected mayor of Houston says she hopes her victory in Saturday's election will change how the world views the city.
Houston is the nation's fourth-largest city and the biggest to elect an openly gay mayor.
Mayor-elect Annise Parker spoke Sunday at a press conference after defeating former city attorney Gene Locke with 53.6 percent of the vote in the hotly contested runoff election.

I personally don't care about her sexual activities, but what are her issues, especially in the sexual orientation arena? For example, does she favor forcing traditional churches, synagogues, and mosques to marry homosexual couples?
Will Dallas get as much pity as “admiration” for this? Texas gone gay... who’da thinked it.
Let me get this straight, liberals want us to be blind when it comes to a persons color and or orientation, yet they’re the 1st to interject a persons color or orientation, seems to me the only ones who are color and orientation blind are conservatives, we don’t give a hoot about either, we care about your ideology and that’s it!
No, it shows our culture decline.
Homesuality is a perversion of sex.
Sex is to be between a man and a woman - hopefully married.
It is a sad day to see another San Franciso in the making.
It’s also disgusting to see two men, one acting like a woman and the other a “man” thinking they are a “couple”. The same is true of two women, one pretending to be the “man” and the other taking on the role of a female in such a perverted way. It’s SICK.
This guy must have used John McCain's campaign staff and strategies...
Gay mayor-elect: Today’s fire and brimstone storm is unexplained.
Tempe, Arizona had a gay mayor in 1994. For ten years I don’t think anyone knew, LOL.
Well, maybe if we can get all these “firsts” out of the way, we can go back to hiring and electing people based on their merit and qualifications. I personally would hate to be the first of a race, sex, orientation, etc. to “accomplish” something that was based entirely on the decision of the public at large because I would never really know if they selected because I was the best qualified or because I would be the first...know what I mean?
Shows what a sick nation we have become.
This is only the 7th time that Parker has been elected to city wide office, so the people of Houston have already accepted her sexuality.
And her opponent was more liberal than Parker.
Well, I hope Houston gets everthing they voted for. They deserve it >sar<.
It's certainly biologically incorrect, if nothing else. Our bodies were not designed for homsexuality, and yet, there they are (the homosexuals, not the bodies)...
And in this election, the more conservative areas of Houston supported the Lesbian candidate over the more liberal black candidate.
This election was not about race or the homosexual agenda, but rather who was best equipped to run the city and the people of Houston elected the more conservative or least liberal of the two.
It certainly has changed my view. Now, Houston ranks right up there with San Francisco as a place I don't want to visit.
How long before there's a rainbow flag flying from City Hall?
You got that right. Imagine if I were the first nerd to be elected mayor of a large city. Would it be because of intense lobbying and social pressure by the nerd/geek/dork community, or because of my merits? Who knows.
Could you please explain to me how Gene Locke was of greater merit or qualification than Mayor Elect Parker?
Is this the same kind of cultural diversity that killed all those people at Fort Hood?
Dallas County has a lesbian Sheriff.
I kind of doubt that will happen. I should mention that she probably benefitted from the anti-Obama vote given the race of her opponent.
I oppose gay marriage and all the other stuff but to me it doesn’t matter what a public official does in the privacy of their quarters as long as they don’t try and push their lifestyle if the public they represent doesn’t want it.
Given that Houston is a third black and a third Hispanic I seriously doubt that you’ll be seeing a “gay revolution” there any time soon and I get the strangest feeling is the person was a real radical “gay all the way” kind of gal she wouldn’t be the Mayor-Elect
What's it's name?
