SALT LAKE CITY -- Mitt Romney is preparing for a more prominent presence on the national scene with a new book coming out next spring. Tickets go on sale next week for a major book event in downtown Salt Lake City in March.
One year since the presidential election ended, Romney is stepping up his profile with national TV appearances, newspaper Op-Eds, fundraising for fellow Republicans and a new book called "No Apology: The Case for America's Greatness."
The book comes out March 2. One of the first events in a national book tour will be at the Salt Palace March 13 -- a book signing and lecture hosted by the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics.
Kirk Jowers, a long-time Romney backer, is its director.
"We hope to have about 10,000 people. Everyone that comes to the event will get a first edition signed copy," he says.
The themes he seems likely to write about are already apparent. At an event earlier this month in Provo, Romney said the policies of the president, including the federal stimulus, had made the recession worse, and that the government needed to stop scaring the private sector with takeovers.
Jowers says the book will offer ideas about turning around a nation some see as in a decline.
"I think he sees the danger. I think he's very optimistic and thinks we're not at that precipice necessarily -- we can continue to ascend -- but I think he sees some very dangerous fault lines," he says.
When it was suggested two weeks ago he sounded like he's running, Romney told us, "No, I sound like I'm working hard for good Republican candidates across the country."
However, with other top Republicans like Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee confronting recent troubles and the economy top of mind, Romney seems poised for another shot.
"If you're a Romney fan, I think everything has broken his way so far," says Jowers.
The website MittRomneyUtah goes live and tickets go on sale this Thursday at 10 a.m.
Why would anyone think that a Johnny Come Lately to conservatism, toting tons of liberal, statist baggage and Romneycare would get the nomination from a ever more conservative GOP electorate?
Sarah, De Mitt..others all have way..way better record than the microscopic, short, needle amongst socialist acts of Mitt.
Mitt is not popular. He's is stiff, in short politically unattractive.
He has energetically worked and tied himself to the disliked and discredited GOP elite.( Father whorship/Mormon elder complex? ) Poor Mitt, always behind the curve. I can not wait for his 'I was never with the RNC/GOP crowd speech. I suppose his living in Washington while shaking down the Feds for the Olympics is forgotten. Someone will bring it up, and Romney/Obama/Harry Reid Care. Poor guy.
I can not see Mitt getting the support of Thompson, Hunter, Ron Paul. I can see legions of mayors, Governors running to the charisma of Palin. And Mitt? Nice guy, have a hors d'oeuvres Mitt, they're lactose free.
Right now I'd like to see a Palin/Bachmann ticket. If for entertainment and consternation only.
Did you know he served in Fwance?
Big question: Who are the bigger sinners - Mormons who give Romney passes on liberal policies or Evangelicals who give Huckabee passes on Christian Socialism?
Mark Levin has sold a million-plus books. Sarah has sold a million-plus books. I can’t wait to pick up Romney’s doorstop for 99¢, the weekend after it’s published.
The title is stolen from a book by Goldwater, isn’t it? And “national greatness” is a neo-con term.
Brilliant.
I don’t know if the title is stolen from a Goldwater book. I’ll have to conduct a search. The book isn’t due out until March 2 or 3, 2010. The reviews I’ve read all state that it appears to be a platform for Romney’s run in 2012.
Goldwater’s book: With No Apologies...
Very close. Excellent memory Arthur McGowan!!!
Sinners? I would think it would be supporting one of the greatest promoters and defenders of abortion in the republican party who also openly supported and promoted the Homosexual agenda, and pushed the liberal agenda in deed, action, and public persuasion, from Planned Parenthood fundraising to fund raising for liberal democrat candidates in elections against republicans.
I have no idea where Jesus might be on the economic policies of an Arkansas Governor.
From those figures, faced with the “problem like Sarah”, the Republican Party brokers need to promote someone else.
Conservatives need a leader.
1. Someone that will stick their neck out.
2. Lead!
3. Fight for conservatism!
4. Convert more people to conservatism, not expand the GOP to include more liberals.
It appears that Romney is for expanding the GOP by bringing liberals into the tent. Palin appears to want to convert independents into conservatives. I agree with her. IMO this announcement of Romney to go on a book tour shows that he is following Palin. To me smacks of 'me-to-ism'.
If Romney goes 'all in' for conservatism... fiscal and social, his stock will rise with me, but following Palin around doesn't make we want to vote for him over Palin. I just can't see Romney making a speech that will make the SRM say something like, "sheeesh, he threw the gauntlet down and there is no doubt where he stands."
I vote for President of the United States, not a church leader.
Somebody please post unequivocally where Romney stands..and what his plans are regarding the following:
1. abortion
2. size of government
3. immigration
4. 2nd amendment
5. Federalism and states rights
6. Homosexual marriage
7. Tea Parties
8. Palin as a force in the Republican party
If someone can show me that Romney is creating more conservatives I'll reconsider my lack of support. America needs a leader to bring in new conservatives, not a person to bring more liberals into the GOP by making the GOP more liberal.
Is that person Romney or Palin?
Right now it is definitely Palin.
Whoever creates more conservatives gets my vote.
Produce a total constitutional crisis. Send everything to the courts, for decades. Tell people they were born free and need not obey bad law. That the people are the law, and that anything not having the vast majority of support, isn't law, but elitists dictation/command/rule.
Re, Mitt. What has he, wrongly or rightly, ever fought for? Where has he shown political spunk?
Palin is literally a trigger puller. Mitt? Some palaver about life long hunting. Maybe Mitt and Sarah can trade favorite rifle/scope stories, eh? "There I was Sarah, on the Harvard quad, and I saw a red squirrel stand on its hind feet in the classic territorial attack posture. He stared squarely into my eyes, and after blinking( me, not the squirrel ) I decided then and there, that I would never walk across the wilds of a Cambridge green without my trusty thousand page tome on estate law and probate."
Spunk? Romney did NOTHING when Team Romney attacked
Gov. Palin and her children.
NOTHING except enjoy the attacks on a GOP conservative.
Mitt Romney has given up his chance to be a candidate.
Ever.
