HOUSTON (AP) - Annise Parker has an unbeatable lead over Gene Locke in Houston's hotly contested mayoral election, meaning she will become the city's first openly gay mayor.
The Harris County elections Web site says 53.62 percent of voters who turned out Saturday chose Parker.
Her rival, former city attorney Gene Locke, was pitching to become the city's second black mayor.

Only 150,000 people turned out to vote in a city with a population of over 2.2 million. Sounds like low voter turn out.
I always thought Houston was one of the more conservative cities in the country.

We already have that in California. Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaregosa openly cheated on his wife with a spanish TV News reporter. Now he’s seen all over town with her.
And running for governor, I hear. In a state where sexual perversion is so prevalent, I guess adultery is no big deal. The crazy thing is that Tiger Woods is being crucified for doing much the same thing. Of course that is an idol falling. No one thinks anything of a liberal politician doing such things.

I can’t say in what context you took that out of conversation...but,...I can tell you I am a Texan and they are NOT HONORED nor RESPECTED here in TEXAS. And it’s a full time job keeping them OUT. Arizona,California,and all border states are overrun with ‘em to the point of a crisis. And even the whole USA.
I hear they have broken California...but illegals are honored there...but we don’t want that in Texas. But, also we don’t like smart a** yankees either.

I looked at the vote count for this mayor...she/he got 81,000 votes. Houston has a probable vote cast of 250,000 out of 2.2 million people.Opponent got 70 thous....looks like people won’t get out & vote for any reason anymore.
And the mayor is not ID’ed as having any spiritual life w/God. What’s YOUR status?
I saw on this thread that some californians my want to move to Texas...here’s the directions:

Anyway, don't feel too bad...Some of the people running the show here in Cal are mentally ill IMO...all but detached from reality. They never go away either...They just go from one government position to another...for decades.
Recently a city supervisor in LA, Mark Ridley-Thomas, has this really poor section of town, some good people actually live there, not all are bad or gangsters.
Most these people have little or nothing and Thomas wants to spend $750,000 on a new office renovation...Then this guy gives the media smug statements suggesting it could be racism because he don't have marble floors and new high end office furniture.... Huh (We're in a freaking near depression)....Many of his legal constituents can barely pay their car insurance.., and he wants to spend 700k+ office remodel?
Can everyone be on crack in his district? Is he bribing them? Holding their welfare hostage? Did he stuff the ballot boxes?... I don't know...Then ya look at this guys staff...And ya find 9 staff members...with their own staffs...
Wow, it used to be just Austin, right? I had no idea Houston was a liberal city. This is kind of scary... we CAN'T lose Texas! :-(
