There's probably a stinking fumarole on the Galapagos Islands that leads straight to Hell. The noxious fumes from that are most likely responsible for the changes in the critters there.
Better put away your science and concentrate on what it says in the book. You do have the right book, don't you?

Science is fine. Human life has not been studied in the Galapagos as far as I know. Keep in mind that Satan was sent here long before humans.
