(CBS) A U.S. government official says a top al Qaeda operative has been killed in a drone attack in western Pakistan and local media says that the strike killed al Qaeda's number 3 in command, Abu Yahya al-Libi, CBS's Sami Yousafzai reports.
The U.S. is still not confirming the report, CBS News has learned.
Abu Yahya al-Libi is the spiritual successor to Palestinian philosopher Abu Azzam - and the inspiration for much of Bin Laden's beliefs, according to CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan. He is very powerful and believed by some to be the natural successor to Bin Laden.

WASHINGTON (AFP) A senior Al-Qaeda leader has been killed in a drone strike in northwest Pakistan, a US official told AFP on Friday.
The person killed was an “upper-tier” figure in the Al-Qaeda network, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The raid was part of a growing bombing campaign by the United States against Al-Qaeda and Taliban figures in tribal areas of Pakistan and came amid CBS reports that the man killed was the Al-Qaeda number three, Abu Yahya al-Libi.
The operation did not target Al-Qaeda’s leader, Osama bin Laden, or his Egyptian deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, officials said.
Good shooting, Dick Cheney! ;-)
Rats!!!
CBS News update says it is not al-Libi..

(CBS) Sources tell CBS News the al Qaeda operative believed killed in a drone strike in Pakistan this week is Saleh al-Somali, who was in charge of external operations for the group. He was considered one of a half dozen top Qaeda operatives.
Saleh al-Somali’s position as al Qaeda’s external operations boss means he was in charge of plotting against the U.S. and Europe, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.
And we had him once...
Think positive!
Definitely a worthwhile target.
Salih al-Inpeciz now, baby!
Another image of the purportedly killed high value AQ target, which now is being reported as an entirely different person identified as Saleh al-Somali.
Oh yeah. He’s a keeper, a Top 6er supposedly.
Saleh al-Somal
