"As a head of state sworn to protect and defend my nation, I cannot be guided by their examples alone. I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people. For make no mistake: evil does exist in the world. A non-violent movement could not have halted Hitlers armies. Negotiations cannot convince al Qaedas leaders to lay down their arms. To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism it is a recognition of history; the imperfections of man and the limits of reason."
ah yes, he says "we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter, and can bend history in the direction of justice." -- eh, not prisoners maybe, but we are definitely under God's Sovereignty and ultimate control over history.
Probably his usual speechwriter passed out from the strain and pressure, and he had to bring in a different one to do this.
Rush played a montage of Obama using the word “I” 30 times during this speech.
This wasn’t Obama.
I noticed that in the paragraph preceding this excerpt, he cited Ghandi and MLK's non-violent approach but both of them had studied Jesus Christ's non-violence. As a Christian, he has yet to witness to his faith. Heard him praising Islam several times this year.
In this speech Obama was speaking directly to the fleeing independents back home, and them alone.
The look on those POS European elitists faces -- just priceless.
The word imbecilic comes to mind.
I hadn't realized how fitting the word actually is. Here is what I found.
im⋅be⋅cile /ˈɪmbəsɪl, -səl or, especially Brit., -ˌsil/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [im-buh-sil, -suhl or, especially Brit., -seel]
See images of imbecile
noun
1. Psychology. a person of the second order in a former classification of mental retardation, above the level of idiocy, having a mental age of seven or eight years and an intelligence quotient of 25 to 50. Wow!
2. a dunce; blockhead; dolt.
adjective
3. mentally feeble.
4. showing mental feebleness or incapacity.
5. stupid; silly; absurd.
6. Archaic. weak or feeble.
Origin:
154050; earlier imbecill < L imbēcillus weak; -ile r. -ill by confusion with suffix -ile
Does that fit this guy to a tee, or not...
Obama won election on a "bring them home" platform but is now ramping up more than Bush ever dared.
Here’s a shorter version of his speech: “I, I, me, I, me, me, I, me, me....”
While I agree that you and I can pull a few sentences out of the speech to agree with, let’s recall that this man waited months to determine he would send less than 50% of the actual number our commander on the field wanted in the first place. Having cut that number in half to 40,000 so he would have some chance of getting his request honored, Obama even cut that by 25%.
Then there’s the fact that Obama waited until the dead of winter to make up his mind, always a great morale builder for troops in theater.
So what we have here is a CIC saying one thing, then taking tangible actions that do not reflect the facts he recited, and the need he seemed to espouse.
Full numbers will not be in theater until next summer, only one year before they are to be pulled out.
So yeah, nice words.
As for Ron Paul, he’s been mighty strong in his disagreement with fighting our enemies on foreign soil vs New York City, Los Angeles, or parts of our heartland.
Can’t say as I respect that.
I used to have a great deal of respect for Ron Paul. I no longer respect him at all.
It is so easy to create straw men and then knock them down, isn't it? This is not true. He called for issuing a Letter of Marque and Reprisal soon after 9-11 which would have taken the fight to the enemy (namely Al Qaeda). His proposal was rejected by those who rather spend our blood and treasure in nation building. BTW, eight years later, how's that working out?
Did you watch the debates??? Obama ran to the right of John McCain on Afghanistan. Sad to say, he is just carrying out his stupid pro-Afghan escalation campaign promises.
Yes, BO. That's what we've been trying to tell you!
It’s not impressive so much as in content as it is in context. Consider the AUDIENCE of Marxist utopia believing-European-elitists he was speaking to. That’s why I appreciate those things Obama said.
Exactly. The looks were priceless. It was like they were twisting their brains up just trying to figure out how they could agree with this because, after all, he is one of them and everything he was saying was so US and Bush and everything they hate.
If that’s the way you wish to look at it, be my guest. His pronouncements have gone far beyond what you state, and he has nobody to blame but himself for my current opinion of him.
National security is our federal government’s number one job. It’s one of only a few it actually has. Ron can’t even get that one right.
Thomas Jefferson himself supported U.S. war powers to take on the Barbary Pirates. Please don’t try to argue the validity of U.S. might used overseas.
We were attacked. We took action to clean out known terrorist strongholds. That is as it should be.
BTW, since when has some of our troops losing their lives been reason not to do the right thing?
riri, I’m glad you see that :) and I saw your other posts on the forum and think it was good for Palin to come out and commend him too.
