U.S. Rep. Brian Baird announced Wednesday he will not seek a seventh term in Congress next year.
"Serving our country and representing the people of Southwest Washington in Congress has been the highest honor and greatest responsibility of my life," the Vancouver Democrat said in a statement.
"Since the time I first announced I would seek election in November of 1995, I have done my utmost to work hard, tell the truth, listen, and do what was right for our nation. I am proud of the record of achievements for our district and I am incredibly grateful to the voters who have entrusted me with this responsibility. I am also appreciative to my staff, all of the friends, supporters and volunteers who have helped along the way."
"The time has now come to pursue other options, other ways of serving," he said. "This is not an easy decision to be sure, but I believe it is the right decision at the right time."
Baird said he looked forward to serving the remainder of his term "with the same level of commitment I have always given the people of this district."
Another dem deciding not to run for reelection. Hmmm indeed.
Obama only got 53% of the vote in this district.
These critters do know how to read the tea leaves. Bailing out early gives them time to line up a cushy political appointment job in D.C. They know they need to act quickly to avoid the rush.
Ping to Baird!
It’s not an easy time to find a private sector job. Law firms may not have a whole lot of bucks sloshing around to hire more political operatives. Maybe he’s allowing himself a little more time to look for a job.
If I am correct, one can be a Congrexx critter for one term of two years, and get a retirment check that is very, very nice.
. BUT, he voted on the stumulus bill without reading it. As reported here on FR, not one person read the bill before voting on it.
(work hard, tell the truth, listen, and do what was right for our nation. I don't think so.)
He can now vote any way he wants to and the next D running for his seat can disavow him right up until the day he takes the oath of office, whereby breaking all previous campaign promises similar to the jackhole in NY-23.
I can see that happening in lots of toss up districts. Sacrifice the incumbent, vote the party line, the incumbents get a chip good for a future run when RINO’s manage to screw the pooch in that district.
Charlie Cook has the district rated as D+0 in terms of its “partisan voter index.” This essentially means the district doesn’t really lean to one party or another. It seems that it is winnable with the right candidate.
Hmmmm....thinking about NJ and VA perhaps?

Not so. It use to be that way but was chnaged almost 30 years go. (check with snopes)
I thought I read once that Reps need two terms to get in on the pension plan and Senators just need one.I certainly could be wrong, however.
"..Congressional pension is a pension made available to members of the United States Congress. Members who participated in the congressional pension system are vested after five (5) years of service..."
Another dhimmi who would rather surrender than lose...
Not true anymore, but any job inside the beltway is preferable to having to return home and live amongst the peasants.
Even though Baird doesn’t have to defend his bad votes now, the downward Dim trend is encouraging. It’s almost always easier to win an open seat than against an incumbent. Any one with a D next to his name will morph into Pelosi. After all a D MUST vote for Pelosi and that means supporting her agenda. This is easy enough for even the most casual voters to understand.
Another Dem retirement. Can we get Linda Smith to run for her old seat ?
Obama promised him a cushy job in his Administration.
