People are freaking out all over Norway because of what you are seeing here. According to Norwegian news outlets, the spooky giant spiral was seen, photographed, and recorded on video from all over the country. Updated with video.
Could it all be a hoax? Maybe it's a massive joke, but all kinds of Norwegian news sites are reporting on it. According to NKRNorway's national TV channelit could be related to a rocket fired from a Russian submarine in the White Sea. The Russians are denying any part on it at this at the moment. Nick Banbury, a witness located at Harstad, described how it all happened:
We are used to seeing lots of auroras here in Arctic Norway, but on my way to work this morning I saw something completely unexpected. Between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. local time, there was a strange light in the sky. It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in colour to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end. This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the earth.
As hard as it is to believe, you can't dispute the fact that the strange spiral was witnessed and recorded by thousands of people from hundreds of miles away, which means that the phenomenon occurred at a very high altitude. Even Phil Plait from Bad Astronomy agrees that this is real, and says that it was probably a rocket out of control.
I believe that cannibalizing a tube amp is a capitol offense.
Oh noes, a cosmic swirly. Earth has just been humiliated.
Those are ZEROS and they are trying to tell us that he is spinning us out of control, and that we’re doomed to the black hole.
LOL - indeed. Especially that Twin Reverb. ;o)
Lots of neat photos at the link. #14 looks like a contrail in the distance - perhaps from a rocket. #5 was weird though a black hole with the blue spiral extending to earth.
Interesting the various phases of the thing and the different looks from various perspectives. I’ll take your word on the rocket thing after I looked at all the photos. But that giant spiral is still hard to believe it came from an out-of control rocket.
I’ve seen northern lights before that looked just like the loops coming off both ends of a bar magnet with iron filings like we did in grade school. That was pretty cool!
My guess is that this report and the photograph are not of a missile. The formation too regular, it lasted way too long, and the reported sequence doesn’t sound like a missile launch.
First serious reply on the whole thread. Thanks for being a voice of sanity.
lol.
Every time I see that picture I always wonder what the giant steering wheel was used for.
Hughes & Kettner is one good example.
those nerds with boards and chain have figured out how to make corp circles in the sky - eh
(an “out of control” rocket would not make such a symmetrical spiral)
But kidding aside, that is a cool light in the sky. I want one too!
Oh no we are going to crash into the milkway galaxy....
It’s really not that mysterious when you think of perspective -— a loop closer to you look bigger than the same loop farther away.
A missle flying like this heading to you (the perspective I saw on the ground) is easy to spot for what it is because the big loop (closest to you) has a rocket at the end and you can follow it.
A missle flying away, the big loop is steady and the center far, so you can’t see the missle.
I saw this from the air, going in on a strike, and it was odd the first time.
(Of course, my target was at the bottom of the contrail.)
“an out of control rocket would not make such a symmetrical spiral”
I would beg to differ. I don’t know if it is a prank, but this is exactly what a missle with a mfg defect of some kind does.
Note even the large spiral (closest to the photographer) becoming less distinct as one would expect as the exhaust dissolves into the atmosphere.
