Boston (SmartAboutHealth) - According to two new studies, coffee and exercise may be the keys to men beating prostate cancer.
The first study was carried out by researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health, and was led by Kathryn M. Wilson. The study focused on data from 50,000 men to get an idea as to the rate at which prostate cancer was being diagnosed, and whether or not coffee would help in any way.
Over a 20-year period from 1986 to 2006, there were nearly 5,000 cases of prostate cancer diagnosed out of the 50,000 men.
What they found was that men who consumed six or more cups of coffee each day reduced their risk of all forms of prostate cancer by 19%.
On top of that, they reduced their risk of an aggressive form of prostate cancer by 41%.
This shows a clear relationship between the amount of coffee consumed, and a reduced risk of prostate cancer.
A direct link was found whether it was regular coffee, or decaffeinated coffee.
The second study released was led by Stacy A. Kenfield from the Harvard School of Public Health.
They looked into the physical activity of roughly 2,700 men who were all diagnosed with prostate cancer.
What they found was a direct link between exercise and prostate cancer survival.
Men who went through vigorous exercise, having 3 or more hours of exercise each week, reduced their risk of death from prostate cancer by 12%.
The combination of these two, coffee and prostate cancer, may truly be the keys to defeating the terrible disease.

Coffee may reduce risk of advanced prostate cancer
Men who regularly drink coffee may be less likely to need advanced prostate cancer treatment than those who rarely consume the hot beverage, new research suggests.
A study presented at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research found that men who drank the most coffee were 60 per cent less likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer than those who never had it.
Coffee contains many active compounds such as antioxidants and minerals and it is thought to be one or more of these that affects prostate cancer risk, rather than caffeine.
The study involved nearly 50,000 men, 4,975 of whom developed prostate cancer over a 20-year period.
Dr Kathryn Wilson, from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, commented: “Coffee has effects on insulin and glucose metabolism, as well as sex hormone levels - all of which play a role in prostate cancer.
“It would be very exciting if this association is confirmed in other studies.”
The majority of cases of prostate cancer occur in men over the age of 70.
As well as age, risk factors for the disease include family history and being of African ancestry.
Researchers say coffee may provide protection against prostate cancer
For men, that morning cup of coffee could be more than just a jolt of caffeine. Men may be getting protection against prostate cancer, as well.
A study of nearly 50,000 men over 20 years shows that those who drank coffee had a 60 percent lower risk of aggressive prostate cancer. The study also shows that drinking coffee may even lower the risk of other types of prostate cancer.
Coffee affects insulin and glucose, metabolism, and sex hormone levels, all of which play a role in prostate cancer.
The study suggests that caffeine is not the ideological factor. It could be hormonal or antioxidents.
So men benefitted even when they were drinking decaf.
Researchers say its still too early to say coffee will protect men against prostate cancer, but all indications are it wont harm them.
because they died of strokes. lol.
I think I’d choose prostate cancer over drinking Starbucks burnt-tar tasting coffee.
That must be what Tiger is doing.
Eat your vegetables — especially coffee and chocolate.
After years of coffee consumption I can now start on the exercise routine, as soon as the weather warms up to about 70 degrees...
There is something about the pits of cherry-like fruits, coffee beans, saw palmetto, and pomegranates, for example, that provide protection.
Two pots of chickory flavored coffee every day (then it's miller time;-). Prolly never get nuttin.
Haha, so very funny.
Funny. But coffee is loaded with antioxidants and likely reduces plaque formation in the bodies arteries. My guess is that it’s both cardio and stroke-protective if not consumed in insane quantities.
Didn't work for me. Diagnosed in 2003 at age 52 and again in 2009.
To be fair, never drank 6 cups daily, perhaps 3. Exercise mainly walking 3 hours per week.
