Even with 10 years to decide, still no name for the decade
yahoo.com ^

Shoulder pads and Reaganomics belong to the '80s. The O.J. Simpson trial and grunge rock helped define the '90s. So September 11 and cell phone texting will remind us of … what? The zeroes? Americans have had 10 whole years to figure out what to call the past decade, and yet most people are still at a loss when it comes to referring to it as anything other than "the current decade" or simply "the 21st century."

I only post this because this is something I asked about 10 years ago. Nobody seemed to care. What do we call the years of the "new millenium"? (The new millineum?)

On to the "millenium teen years" I suppose?

Feel free to post your sarcastic remarks about how you don't care.

I think the term "Zeros" is appropriate, in more ways than one.

It’s odd there is no grab-name for it but, until your post, I hadn’t realized it was missing. You’d think a decade of such upheaval, with 9/11, war, and the switch to Obamanomics....perhaps it’s just too varied to be encapsulated well?

My Grandmother called it the “oughts” as in nineteen-ought-one (1901), etc. It is a real problem though for radio DJs; “Playin’ the best hits of the ‘80s, ‘90s and ‘00s!” just doesn’t sound right.

No problem. The 21st century will be referred to just as the 20th was. People will soon stop referring so much to the 20th, and the decades of the new century will just be the '10s, '20s, '60s, etc. There will be another '60s

And people will stick the "19" in front of the decades when referring back to the 20th century, just as we've been doing for the 19th century, putting the "18" in front of those decades.
