Abortion Bomb Hits Senate Health Debate
New York Daily News ^ | December 7, 2009 | Michael McAuliff

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson dropped his anti-abortion amendment into the Senate health care debate this afternoon, essentially lifting the language from the House version that so angered the left.

Nelson, a staunch pro-life advocate, partnered with fellow Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and several Republicans to offer the measure, saying it’s necessary to ensure no federal dollars are spent on elective abortions.

“Most Americans, even some who support abortion, do not want taxpayer money to be used for abortions,” Nelson said in his floor speech. “We should not break with precedent on this bill.”

Nelson said the amendment would bar women from abortion coverage if they get any sort of subsidy, and would bar it entirely from the public plan, should there be one.

“As President Obama has said, ‘This is a health care reform bill, it’s not an abortion bill,’” he added.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand begged to differ on his interpretation, however, as did other Democrats, calling it an unprecedented expansion of restrictions on a legal medical procedure.

“His reading of his amendment is not the same as my reading of the amendment,” Gillibrand told us. “it’s a significant departure from current federal law. And while we can agree that many Americans are very comfortable with current federal law… what this does is vastly expand that.

“This is an amendment that basically makes it impossible for women to have access to a full range of reproductive services whether they purchase it themselves, whether they’re subsidized or not,” she added.

It doesn’t matter if there is explicit language banning abortion in the HC bill. HHS will change the rules once they get HC passed.

Co-sponsored by Bob Casey? Well, mymymy - must be under some pressure from back home. Young Bob, unlike his esteemed father the governor, has been strongly pro-abort in recent years.....

Can’t see the mirrors due to the smoke. The feces may hit the fan but the blades may not be turning. Hard to believe what these deceitful Rats say and what they intend. We should abort the senators instead.

but my understanding is that Casey will still vote for it even w/o the amendment...so his “principle” is one of little consequence...ie, happy to sell his soul but still call himself pro-life

hypocrite

I really wish these BENIGHTED FOOLS would drop this abortion restriction effort. We don’t WANT the bill to pass, in ANY form.

What are you trying to do? Make it GOOD ENOUGH to pass?

Will the abortion restriction be your SELLOUT PRICE that will purchase your vote for the SOCIALIZATION OF AMERICA.

Get real, you freaking idiots. Kill this monster, don’t put lipstick on it.

It is beyond my ken how anyone can be both pro-life and a Democrat. Or pro-abortion and Catholic.

Somehow I think he’s going to vote for it anyway.

Another $100 million you say, NO problemo.

It’s all a ruse. If the Senate passes the bill with the anti-abortion amendment included, it will simply be removed by the House-Senate conference committee when the two separate bills are “reconciled” to a final product. Damn them all.

Ah-HAH! They are admitting the inherent flaw in the health care (or should I say healthcare rationing) plan.

Under their plan, people will be restricted from getting the health care they need (any kind of health care service), even if they try to purchase it themselves!

The Dems know this; they know the bill will restrict (all) health care services to everyone, even to those who have the means to pay.

However, when rationing/restrictions apply to their sacred cow abortion, they scream bloody murder. Ironic, isn't it.

Just another reason why this is NOT about health care - IT IS ALL ABOUT CONTROL OVER THE POPULACE. And the RAT party truly believe that once they get this passed they will be in power for the foreseeable future. They recognize they may lose power for 2 or 4 years, but will regain it and be firmly in CONTROL of just about everything - that is why they are ALL falling on the sword to get this passed. Obama has promised all RAT they will be the controlling party if they can just get this passed - and for Obama he knows this will put him in the history books.

Yes, they want to impose restrictions on us, but ease up on restrictions for themselves and their pet issues.

What hypocrites.

I let Casey know via email how many of us thought of his liberal views. His father carried the fight to the floor of the Democrat convention in New York and was humiliated by pro abort crowd. Will Casey cave in under pressure? I think he will. He has no spine.
