Emails that rocked climate change campaign leaked from Siberian 'closed city' university
Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | December 6, 2009 | Will Stewart and Martin Delgado

Suspicions were growing last night that Russian security services were behind the leaking of the notorious British ‘Climategate’ emails which threaten to undermine tomorrow’s Copenhagen global warming summit.

An investigation by The Mail on Sunday has discovered that the explosive hacked emails from the University of East Anglia were leaked via a small web server in the formerly closed city of Tomsk in Siberia.

The leaks scandal has left the scientific community in disarray after claims that key climate change data was manipulated in the run-up to the climate change summit of world leaders.

The row erupted when hundreds of messages between scientists at the university’s Climatic Research Unit (CRU) and their colleagues around the world were placed on the internet along with other documents.

The CRU is internationally recognised as one of the most important sources of information on the rise in global temperatures.

Its data is relied on by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the UN body which co-ordinates the world response to climate change.

But now the CRU’s findings are under suspicion.

The leaked emails appear to show that CRU director Professor Phil Jones and colleagues attempted to manipulate the figures and hide their raw data from researchers with opposing views.

Prof Jones has stepped aside from his post while claims are investigated that he wanted certain papers excluded from the United Nations’ next major assessment of climate science.

Russia – one of the world’s largest producers and users of oil and gas – has a vested interest in opposing sweeping new agreements to cut emissions, which will be discussed by world leaders in Copenhagen tomorrow.

Russia believes current rules are stacked against it, and has threatened to pull the plug on Copenhagen without concessions to Kremlin concerns.

The Mail on Sunday understands that the hundreds

The Daily Mail is talking rubbish, and the headline is misleading. Read the article. The Russian server in question, Tomcity, isn't located in the University. It's owned by a company, Tomline, that provides internet service to the University. The Daily Mail writes "The firm offers an internet security business to prevent hacking and bugs and the ‘compromising of confidential information’." In other words, they offer proxy IP addresses that anyone in the world can use.

There were three proxy servers -- not just one -- involved in the "leaking" of the FOIA.zip.

According to RealClimate, the mouthpiece for AGW scientists, "At around 6.20am (EST) Nov 17th, somebody hacked into the RC server from an IP address associated with a computer somewhere in Turkey, disabled access from the legitimate users, and uploaded a file FOIA.zip to our server. They then created a draft post that would have been posted announcing the data to the world that was identical in content of the comment posted on The Air Vent later that day.

Jeff Id, the owner of The Air Vent blog,  tells us that the post was made from  Saudi Server 212.116.220.100.

The same message, and .zip file, was also posted several hours before the one at the Air Vent, at Steve McIntyre's blog, Climate Audit. According to McIntyre, "The IP address of the commenter at CA was Russian 82.208.87.170."

All three addresses used are proxies.

According to Jeff Id on this Air Vent post explaining the sequence of events, "This is not unsophisticated and made me think of a government agency first. Someone with resources and knowledge. Who’s going to be able get a proxy link from Russia, Saudi Arabia or Turkey and which proxy sent the email to those? They knew what they were doing."

The point is, it could be anyone in any government, or it could simply be a sophisticated techie, who also, if Real Climate is to be believed, knew how to "disable access" on that blog -- someone who might, for example, have gained administrative access through a password.

And none of this answers the question on who actually collected and released the files.

But it makes for a sensational, and misleading, headline.

East Anglia University has gone out of its way to promote itself to students from the former Soviet Union. Its website says that 33 Russian students currently study there.

This University was completely hacked and infiltrated, no doubt.

Russians once feared being sent to Siberia’s Gulag.
They fear Climategate more!

It's much more likely that Dr. Jones himself kept a collection of those emails on the Rusian server.

He simply thought it was "safe". He was as wrong about internet security as he is about Global Warming.

Stupid does as stupid is, eh!

Commies doing in other Commies....this is precious!

Of course, the Commies probably destroyed the enviroment more than any Capitalist ever has...just look at the old USSR, Communist China, and Eastern Europe. Funny now that Commies in the US are the biggest “enviros” now.

Let Barabara Boxer know the Ruskies are behind the hacked emails. She said she wants a criminal investigation. Let her try to indict Putin’s people, that should be entertaining.

Well, that explains a lot - - Siberia would have no problem with "global warming", now would it?

If we were actually to go into a warming period, vast stretches of Siberia and Canada would become warm enough for farming.

They have already warned Obama that state controlled economies don’t work. China and Russia have both warned America that crippling the free market is a bad idea.

Did they change the title on you..?

It now reads:

Were Russian security services behind the leak of 'Climategate' emails?

Yes, it’s not uncommon for this and a couple of other websites to change the titles of some articles.
