A spokesman for U.S. Sen. Max Baucus says the Montana Democrat was in a romantic relationship with the woman he nominated for U.S. attorney.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus was already involved with his girlfriend and former staffer when he recommended her earlier this year to become the next U.S. attorney for Montana, a spokesman said.
The Montana Democrat and his former state office director Melodee Hanes began their relationship in the summer of 2008, after Baucus separated from his wife, Ty Matsdorf told The Associated Press late Friday.
Baucus nominated Hanes for the U.S. attorney post in Montana in March. But she later withdrew, saying she had been presented with other opportunities she couldn't pass up.

Only reason Max won the last “election” in Montana was good old fashioned FRAUD, with the open complicity of what passes for print and TV media in the state.
There were originally two or three Pubbys lined up to run against Baucus, but the “news”papers (especially the Billings Gazette) ran front page hit pieces on all of them from the second they announced until they’d finally been slandered into oblivion.
Then, the ‘rats hired an old political gadfly named Kelleher to file as a Republican for the first time in his life, and using the Open Primary system we’ve got here, got themselves a gag gift opponent who lost by forty or so percentage points in November. (As I recall, I wrote in my grandson’s dog for Senator)
Voila. Baucus wins.
Montana (and the country) loses.
Go and ask the Billings Gazette about any of this, and they’ll probably refer you to our rat governor, who’s famous for equating vote fraud (the ‘06 election that put Tester in the Senate) to a big joke.
I’m not laughing. I’m just looking for ropes.
I guess MT then has a lot of competition for the title “Worst Voters in the US”.
I don’t know about calling us “worst”.
There’s a whole bunch who certainly qualify for Safety-Wired-to-Pi$$ed-Off right now.
Tester isn’t up until ‘12, and he’s already running his re-election campaign in almost a panic mode.
To quote the great Tony Soprano, "What happened to Gary Cooper? The strong, silent type. That was an American. He wasn't in touch with his feelings. He just did what he had to do."

“The democrats have figured out that to get rid of Red States all they have to do is take over the AG office and the Secy of State office....gives them the election edge they need.”
I know I’m late to this party, but you are correct. I constantly harp on Freepers to pay attention to their state Supreme Court and the elections of judges.
Wisconsin has FINALLY turned the corner with TWO Conservative judges seated in the past two years.
Of course, NOW our ‘Rat Governor has suddenly done a 180 and approved Public Funding for SC races...something he’d NEVER done before when the ‘Rats ran our SC as well as every other dysfunctional part of our state.
Grrrrrrr!
All I ask is that you all pay attention locally. It really DOES make a difference. :)
He’s as important to MT as Robert C. Byrd is to WV, but Robert C. Byrd wouldn’t do all of that! People in MT have no right to criticize West Virginians, I suppose.
I never heard the latest of Senator Johnson’s health, but it must be good enough for people in SD.
I think the word “fairness” has destroyed MT and most of her fellow states because people equate “government” with being “fair”.
Most people though are just unable to keep up with all the names on a ballot. So they vote “D” or “R” for convenience.
