Sarah Palin scrambled away from the birther movement last night after giving them a wink and a nod on a conservative radio talk show yesterday. Posting on her Facebook page at 1:16am, Palin writes that, "at no point not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States." She tries to dismiss her birther flirtation as just an acknowledgment of voters' right to know: "Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. Ive pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child."
Well ... three problems with her explanation.
First, here's what she said when asked if she would raise the birth certificate issue in a presidential campaign (emphasis mine):
I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue. I don't have a problem with that. I don't know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think that members of the electorate still want answers.
The key word there is "rightfully," which in this context means that it is right--as in correct or proper--to ask the question. She didn't say that the public has the right to ask, she said that it's right for the public to ask. That's an Alaska-sized difference.

You know the type.
Whenever confronted with a serious and fair question, they think that stonewalling is an appropriate solution instead of a direct answer.
These same idiots tend to think that by raising their voices at you is part of a "worthy response."
But these same damn democrat idiots are the ones who always refuse to answer a question directly.
And that, my FRiend, is what motivates me to stick them even harder with the line of direct questioning.
If Raila Odinga's number one cousin has nothing to hide, then why does he spend nearly 2 million on a legal defense team?
You made me get coppee up by doze.
Sounds like one hell of a good cabinet, regardless of who is in the 'driver's seat'.
The American people have a right to ask their leaders for information.
But the questions they ask might not be the “right” questions.
I could ask Obama is he is born in Hawaii.
But if I were convinced he was born there, and had a chance to ask him a question, that would be the wrong question for me to ask.
Getting into more of an area of opinion, most of us would agree that the press had the right (freedom of the press) to ask Bush about whether he did crack 20 years ago. But some people thought the press was WRONG (improper) to ask those questions.
Trying to wrap around it with an analogy here — but don’t you sometimes find yourself saying “Sure, you have a RIGHT to ask that question, but why would you, it’s offensive, or it’s insulting, or it’s inconsequential”.
As to what Sarah meant by that, I can only guess.
I have stayed out of this so far, but this idiotic post from the fast failing US News and World Report is too much.
Of course the public RIGHTFULLY has the right to ask ANY candidate ANY questions they like.
Same way the bottom feeding press continued to viciously harass Sarah Palin over the insane notion that her own child was not her child, and pestered her doctor and her lawyer till they comfrimed it and saw the birth certificate themselves. The biggest “birthers” on the planet are the State Run Media who insisted on seeing the birth certificate of Trig Palin.
Its totally insane, as compared to the legitimate concerns of citizens to see 0bozo’s birth certificate.
After all, Trig is not running for president, so why the heck were the Obamabot media bottom feeders in a feeding frenzy to see his birth certificate, even while they stayed silent over 0bozo’s missing birth certificate?
It's a shame that society is too stupid and the media is too democrat to ask tough questions.
Raila Odinga's favorite cousin is spending nearly 2 million dollars on a legal defense team because he knows that he is a fraud, liar and POS.
Duncan Hunter is a joke when it come to the 2012 conversation. Been there, done that and nobody is interested except for a few Palin-bashing misogynist freepers.
Toss in Bolton as head at State and we’d really be smoking.
The birthers would be better off and more productive to go after the records that he has sealed, eg. high school, Occidental College, Columbia U., Harvard U. academic and enrollment info. If released, this info would lead us to the stuff we're seeking in the real birth certificate. As long as he can say, "I've released my birth certificate" he feels like he's off the hook. He can't say that about any other records of his life. Go after the other records!
The fact that the media is attacking Governor Palin for discussing the issue brings me to the conclusion that the MSM, democrats and other obamanista idiots are all en route straight to hell.
The fact that they are dragging this great Republic down with them is what pisses me off the most.
I hope and pray that we get Congress back in November.
and
Were you born in the United States of America as proscribed in the Constitution?
are somehow equivalent?
I would change this to I know. I would also add:
I know he lied in his memoir when he said his mother and Obama Sr. lived together in Hawaii for two years before he left.
I know Obama lied about his “Christian faith” when he has never been baptized.
I know he lied in his memoir when he said his mother and Obama Sr. were married in Hawaii.
I know Obama’s people have claimed he was born in two different hospitals.
I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue. I don't have a problem with that. I don't know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think that members of the electorate still want answers.
most people interpreted that as a sign that Sarah supported those who were pushing for Obama to answer the questions, and that she didn't think she would HAVE to MAKE it an issue, because there would be enough other people pushing it that it would ALREADY be an issue.
Most importantly, she said "the public rightfully is still making it an issue". That certainly implied that she felt the public was RIGHT to make it an issue; which would imply that she agreed that it was an issue, and was therefore happy that the public was acting "rightfully" by raising the issue.
Today, her statement on facebook, under the heading "stupid conspiracies",was:
Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. Ive pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask... which they have repeatedly. But at no point not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.
That sounds like she is equating people asking about the birth certificate now to people who asked her whether Trig was really her son. So she has compared the birth certificate crowd here to Andrew Sullivan.
I tend to agree with her position on this issue. But it is certainly clear that last night on the conservative talk-show she made a statement that did not agree with her own position, at least so far as people here at FR read that statement.
And I think it is pretty clear that the reasonable interpretation of her statement as I put it above is accurate.
This may be a tempest in a teapot, but it is certainly not "nothing".
Quite the analysis, especially coming from someone who’s been here all of several weeks.
YOUR post makes it hard to take you seriously.
It was a RADIO interview dude. No one was winking at anybody. BTW, politicians wink all the time. Obozo has been winking, and Bush winked before him too.
Oh, yeah...the conservative wing of the Republican Party needs to organize, and start making some noise.
Please, PLease don’t throw me in that briar patch!!!
Boy she’s dumb, now everyone (both left and right) is talking about the fact that noone actually has seen Obama’s BC.
Her comments about the left and the Trig stories completely absolves her.
That's exactly what she said.
