Sarah Palin scrambled away from the birther movement last night after giving them a wink and a nod on a conservative radio talk show yesterday. Posting on her Facebook page at 1:16am, Palin writes that, "at no point not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States." She tries to dismiss her birther flirtation as just an acknowledgment of voters' right to know: "Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. Ive pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child."
Well ... three problems with her explanation.
First, here's what she said when asked if she would raise the birth certificate issue in a presidential campaign (emphasis mine):
I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue. I don't have a problem with that. I don't know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think that members of the electorate still want answers.
The key word there is "rightfully," which in this context means that it is right--as in correct or proper--to ask the question. She didn't say that the public has the right to ask, she said that it's right for the public to ask. That's an Alaska-sized difference.

No flip flop here.
Hope the fringe media reports both comments. That way, those who have never heard of the so called birth certificate issue will want more details. It keeps the Obama Birth Certificate Issue in the headlines.
Because the legal status of the Panama Canal Zone is a bit fuzzy, but the legal status of Hawaii is not. Duh.
What I notice is how, if anyone mentions the birth certificate issue in public, the press will get right up in their faces. Are you suggesting he wasn’t born in Hawaii? Most people in public life will then back quickly away, no, I never said that. I would never say that.
I don’t know anything more than anyone else does. I just notice the dynamic. No one in public life dares to ask him for any information about his past. No one dares to ask him for any documentation. And anyone who does, gets a very sharp confrontation and they back quickly away.
Its almost just like the globwarm doubters have been treated over the last decade. “You don’t believe in global warming? Are you admitting you’re a deniar?” And they immediately start hemming and hawing. No, I never said that. Of course the earth is warming, everyone knows that.
Find it amusing that no matter how many times the Leftist media lies to them, a certain sort of "Conservative" will still buy their every words as gospel truth rather take anything they print with a massive grain of salt. This article is total BS.
As usual, the Junk Media attacked her, she corrected their misstatements about her position and they attack her for "Flip flopping" when she did no such thing. She merely corrected THEIR misstatements about what she said.
She merely pointed out that if it is ok for the Left to question her on Trig's birth certificate, it is ok for others to question Obama on his. She did not demand anything of Obama or "join the birther movement as this fraud of a "journalist" is trying to claim.
Her statements on this issue are completely consistent, this Democrat party hack pretending to be a "journalist" should be fired for journalistic fraud.
He is deliberately lying about what she said by placing his own interpenetration on her words rather then factually reporting them, he then misrepresenting her response as being something completely different from what she actually said.
Wow. This is really worth a column in U.S. News and World Report? The left has actually gone insane.
Do you know what a metaphor is?
Sheesh.
Perfect for steve-b and ilk, the troll boners!
SueRae, you took the words out of my mouth. All this just proves however is how RELEVANT Palin is. :)
I think they calculate that the obama problem will take care of itself so no need to muddy the waters right now.
Once they get Congress back in 2010 they can make him a lot of trouble.
In which case Dear Reader should produce the birth certificate. I can produce mine on demand. Why can he not?
You made my point for me very well. Try to give the SRM a reasonable explanation of anything and they inevitibly twist it out of shape.
I believe Palin has been on the correct side on the “birther” issue. Her mistake here was to be too clever by half on a conservative talk show, using language that clearly suggested she was on the side of the “show the birth certificate” movement.
That is clear because of how many threads we had here where the birth-certificate folks praised her for being with them.
But it is now clear she is not with them, other than to acknowledge their right to ask the question; not that they are RIGHT to ask the question.
She essentially grants them the right to ask the wrong question.
Yea, that's the problem.
The article makes a big deal about semantics. It seems like just another hit piece by the MSM. Her supposed “flip-flop” was when she said she never brought up the issue herself. She is right, she didn't. It seems Sarah is under a microscope and the MSM is only trying to find bad things no matter how nebulous or how minor. They are just trying to find anything to make her look bad.
Notice how the state media is more concerned over whether or not Sarah flip-flops on Obamao’s birth certificate, but they could care less about any reasons Obamao has for not producing it. This is journalism in the unreal world of liberal lies. Who cares if someone thinks Obamao should or shouldn’t produce his birth certificate. The only thing a journalist should be concerned with is why he is afraid to. That’s the real story here.
Why do you think that Sarah can't or doesn't handle herself? Do you think there are people pulling her strings?
We know that there were in the election, because she had to yield to the presidential nominee at the top of the ticket.
But it seems condescending to suggest now that she has people who are making her say things she doesn't want to say.
Why is this ‘reporter’ attacking Palin on a problem that concerns Obama. Why doesn’t this lowlife, bed-wetting scumbag use the same zeal to ask his saviour where all his records are? Bizzaro world.
Who cares what this idiot thinks?
