When Vallejo Mayor Osby Davis told the New York Times in a recent interview that gay people don't get to heaven, he broke not one, but two cardinal rules of politics in a single sentence.
With a simple phrase, Davis breached the separation between church and state and grabbed the electrified "third-rail" in Bay Area politics with both hands.
He told the reporter that gays are "committing sins and those sins will keep them out of heaven." After the Nov. 20 article, the mayor claimed his words were taken out of context. The Times responded by providing an audio link to the interview.
The trouble with Davis' claim - and a written apology issued later - is that there is no appropriate context suitable for such a statement, especially when it's uttered by an elected official. What's more, there isn't a resident in the Bay Area who doesn't understand the weight of such a comment.
Davis' recent verbal gaffe is seen by some as the latest salvo in an escalating battle between Christian fundamentalist residents - including the mayor - and the city's growing and politically active gay community.

“If I knew God I’d be Him.”
State after state is saying "Yes, we can"....and shoot down gay marriage.
“With a simple phrase, Davis breached the separation between church and state . . .”
Sez who?
The gay activists have been combing through every comment that the man makes to use against him. Gay does not equal stupid. While it may of been a truthful statement of his beliefs, he handed his enemies a tool. It was a strategic blunder for a politician, like a commander in a battle giving his enemy a opening.
Look at his picture. He is not one of the Mormons who voted against Prop 8, if you know what I mean.
“taken out of context” seems to be the phrase that pays for every liberal in the country these days. And if that doesn’t work, you check yourself into “rehab”.
If you want to see a firestorm wait until they ask Palin that question.

“Less than a year after the mayoral election, Vallejo officials declared bankruptcy in the face of a budget that could not provide even basic city services. The city’s police and fire services alone consumed 74 percent of the city’s $79 million budget in 2008.”

Looks like it’s a moot point. I’ll assume everyone here is a democrat as party affiliation is not mentioned. It looks to me like someone is finding out that being black does not necessarily always allow one to say anything one damn well pleases.
Where did he establish law as to who gets into heaven? He was discussing sin and God. Now the atheist zealots want politicians to be completely silent on such matters (conceding authority to their no-god god).
