Yes there are 100,000 or so apps for the iPhone, but thanks to Apple policy if it's porn you are after there's not an app for that. The construction of an Adult App Store for Android devices, however, could soon swing this particular market segment towards the iPhone competitor.
The MiKandi App Store is strictly an adults only affair, and claims to be the world's first fully mobile adult app store. Although currently only available for Android users, the developers are already talking about supporting other platforms in the future. Given the tight control that Apple has over the iPhone, don't expect it to be amongst them unless the developers target users of Jailbroken handsets that is.
MiKandi downloads a widget to the Android handset which acts in the same way as the App Store does on the iPhone, becoming a portal to content which in this case is anything legal according to the company behind it.
I'm not convinced it will be any kind of killer app for Android devices, and certainly doubt it will impact upon sales of the iPhone or the apps its users love so much. After all, if iPhone users want porn they already have an app that can do that. It's called Safari and it is quite happy to go and load whatever video and still image content you point it at, including that which is for the over 18 crowd only.
One area it could make a difference though is in bandwidth usage. Currently the Android only consumes about 11% of mobile bandwidth compared to 50% for the iPhone. Start throwing porn into the mix and the Android could soon start eating up the bandwidth like it is going out of fashion.
Oh, and before I forget, it should come as no great surprise given the apparent coin toss that is the App Store approval process, that Apple has already delved into the pornstar arena with the iPhone. CNET News reports that Apple has approved a couple of apps that enable fans to follow the careers of adult movie star Sunny Leone and Penthouse Pet Aria Giovanni. The content is, I am led to believe, pretty tame and certainly not explicit in any way, but it does show once again that those app approval goalposts are pretty movable things.
As I said, only a few (at most) rejected due to the contract with AT&T.
In general I don’t like it, but AT&T seriously stuck its neck out on the iPhone, so the company deserves to be compensated for taking the risk where no other company would.
While the porn industry effectively did decide VHS vs. Beta, they didn’t have much of a say in the HD format wars. They were actually migrating towards HD-DVD because of more relaxed terms and better support, but their content delivery in general was shifting to the Internet anyway.
This format war was decided by the big studios, aided by the PlayStation 3 putting hundreds of thousands of relatively cheap Blu-ray players into homes.

Not to mention a video player that uses open codecs. Porn content isn't difficult to find; whether or not there's a market for porn code is very much an open question. I remember "strip poker" on DOS with its blocky 16-color graphics ...
Also worth mentioning is that Google hasn't, and doesn't need to, endorse or approve porn apps. The user can install code from anywhere at any time. Whether that's preferable to Apple's controlled App Store/iTunes model is a valid question.
I consider the Droid’s weakness to be a lack of Itunes or a way to get video easily.
If Apple goes the route the Droid seems to be headed simply to worship a buck... I think that would be a mistake.
I don't think you have to be concerned about that and the Apple App Store for the iPhone. They won't be going to porn.... :-)
With Android you will be able to get any app you want. With iPhone you need approved apps.
With Apple, it's "approved" according to some minimal operational/software standards having to do with the iPhone, and then, other basics such as copyright/trademark issues and then some standards such as no porn and no offensive/derogatory stuff which could involve Apple in lawsuits and stuff like that (they've got enough lawsuits as it is, without even trying... LOL...).
All in all, what they control at Apple is more a thorn in someone's "mind" -- more than a reality which affects the vast and overwhelming majority of iPhone users.
I would say this is a total "non-issue" with users in general and is only something that a few developers like to squawk about, just because they can't do whatever they want and they stamp their feet and holler and cry and so on... LOL... big deal!
When your competitor is making a mistake, let them. Please don’t follow their “lead”.

Just gives me another reason to never buy/use an Android-based phone.

But, I didn't have to wait for Android to sink to "selling trash" before I figured out that it was junk to begin with...
Because you don’t have to download an app that provides a service some may want?
3G network. AT&T controls the iPhone store at this point, and if they perceive any app as a threat to them its not going to get on there.
You can get the Skype app for the iPhone and iPod Touch and make phone calls and bypass AT&T... :-)

Yep, iTunes was a great Apple idea and they've done good on it. I remember when there was no iPhone, no iPod and no iTunes store. There was iTunes (the program).
And then, the iTunes Store opened it's virtual doors and I got my account in the first day that they opened and got a few initial songs. I thought it was amazing.
Of course, I had already used iTunes (the program) for a while before that and had "downloaded" a few songs here and there from miscellaneous other sources. But, here was Apple, making a "storefront" to legally sell songs and build a huge selection in the process. And so..., they've done extremely well with that idea.
Steve Jobs had it all figured out, I think, a long time ago...

Exactly! That's why the Apple iPhone will always do a whole lot better than trash like Android... :-)
