Yes there are 100,000 or so apps for the iPhone, but thanks to Apple policy if it's porn you are after there's not an app for that. The construction of an Adult App Store for Android devices, however, could soon swing this particular market segment towards the iPhone competitor.
The MiKandi App Store is strictly an adults only affair, and claims to be the world's first fully mobile adult app store. Although currently only available for Android users, the developers are already talking about supporting other platforms in the future. Given the tight control that Apple has over the iPhone, don't expect it to be amongst them unless the developers target users of Jailbroken handsets that is.
MiKandi downloads a widget to the Android handset which acts in the same way as the App Store does on the iPhone, becoming a portal to content which in this case is anything legal according to the company behind it.
I'm not convinced it will be any kind of killer app for Android devices, and certainly doubt it will impact upon sales of the iPhone or the apps its users love so much. After all, if iPhone users want porn they already have an app that can do that. It's called Safari and it is quite happy to go and load whatever video and still image content you point it at, including that which is for the over 18 crowd only.
One area it could make a difference though is in bandwidth usage. Currently the Android only consumes about 11% of mobile bandwidth compared to 50% for the iPhone. Start throwing porn into the mix and the Android could soon start eating up the bandwidth like it is going out of fashion.
Oh, and before I forget, it should come as no great surprise given the apparent coin toss that is the App Store approval process, that Apple has already delved into the pornstar arena with the iPhone. CNET News reports that Apple has approved a couple of apps that enable fans to follow the careers of adult movie star Sunny Leone and Penthouse Pet Aria Giovanni. The content is, I am led to believe, pretty tame and certainly not explicit in any way, but it does show once again that those app approval goalposts are pretty movable things.
Okay, you "porn aficionados"... get ready for your porn on Android...
Okaaaayyyy.... using “porn” for Android — to be the iPhone killer... :-)
There’s a fapp for that.......
With Android you will be able to get any app you want. With iPhone you need approved apps.
Plus for Android: Free availability of apps regardless of what some vetting agent thinks.
Bad for Android: There is no vetting agent to make sure the app isn’t malware, won’t screw up your phone, or isn’t in general poorly-written crap.
Pick your poison.
Dear Apple,
When your competitor is making a mistake, let them. Please don’t follow their “lead”.
Android...how about “iPorn”?
If all Apple and AT&T did was vet the program for malware you’d have an argument.. as you probably know, that’s not their main purpose.. its main purpose to ensure no app is going to get onto your phone that will cut into AT&T’s profits.
OK, my Moto Droid has a really nice, big, hi-res screen (for a phone), but I still don’t see why anyone would want to watch anything on a screen that small, porn or otherwise.
So far I’ve only heard of a few apps that have been rejected due to the contract Apple has with AT&T. Most are rejected due to quality concerns, which usually get corrected and lead to successful submission. A few are rejected due to content.
Well, I thought the porn industry’s decision is what settled the argument between Blu-ray and HD-DVD.
1. I read the article
2. I’m conversant enough with computers to know this is a big “duh”.
3. It’s like homosexual marriage... shack up if you want, it’s a free country... just don’t expect the rest of us to endorse it.
If Apple goes the route the Droid seems to be headed simply to worship a buck... I think that would be a mistake.
Just gives me another reason to never buy/use an Android-based phone. I will reserve my other comments...
Typical disinformation you are dishing out there. While I won’t deny that they do screen apps that might supplant services provided by ATT, you would be amazed at how many apps are rejected because they are unstable, contain horrible content, or other wise would cause serious problems for users.
I think that was between VHS and BetaMax.
Nope,
AT&T kyboshed an app that let you leverage a google app to make internet phone calls... So you could effectively run this app and call using networking rates and bypass AT&T phone system to make your calls, just use your 3G network. AT&T controls the iPhone store at this point, and if they perceive any app as a threat to them its not going to get on there.
No its not “DISINFORMATION” AT&T controls, at least at this point what gets to the app store. And if you think they don’t review every app as to whether it is a threat to their revenue model before approving or rejecting it, you are beyond naive.
