And the sad thing is that the Christians could have won Constantinople back in 1878 with little trouble (Russians on a successful run in the Balkans helping the Bulgarians and others) -- if only Prime Minister Disraeli hadn't persuaded Queen Victoria to threaten war against Russia in defense of the Ottomans (25 years after the same mistake in the Crimean War). How sad that the commercial interests of the British Empire outweighed all concern for justice and morality.

Instead, after the Western powers forbade the freeing of more Christians from Islamic tyranny, you had the German Bismarck operating as a so-called "Honest Broker", actually handing Bulgaria back to Ottoman control for the next 40 years. And this all resulted in the stresses that led to World War I and the beginning of the end of European Christian civilization. (Western Europe now tending toward a post-Christian civilization.)
