The most-played sound bite from Barack Obama’s speech on Afghanistan will be the following:
“I have determined that it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 US troops to Afghanistan. After 18 months, our troops will begin to come home."
It sounds odd because it is: we’re coming in heavy, but then we’re off.
“If you put in a timeline you encourage the enemy to outwait you, to regard the strategy as not enduring,” said Zalmay Khalilzad, a former US envoy to Afghanistan.
"When I was ambassador the Taliban sent me a message saying ‘you have all the watches but we have all the time’. It may encourage the Taliban and others in the region to assume we don’t have the staying power and therefore make the job harder,” he told CNN.
The president should perhaps be given credit for being deliberately vague. He did not say how many troops would be pulled out in July 2011 or how quickly. There was no end-date. He gave scant clues of the strategy behind his exit strategy, but clearly believes that without a deadline the Afghan government would not get its act together.
“The absence of a timeframe for transition would deny us any sense of urgency in working with the Afghan government,” said Mr Obama, anticipating the criticism that quickly followed.
“It must be clear that Afghans will have to take responsibility for their security, and that America has no interest in fighting an endless war in Afghanistan.”
Perhaps that’s all July 2011 is, a whip. And it may work. The Taliban may indeed bide their time, but in their absence an army can be established, sound government developed, schools constructed and legal agriculture propagated. The extremist militia might return when Nato forces are much reduced

I watched him go the hand shaking routine with the Cadets. The camera was “set”....didn’t move out of a 6 ft square...
Obama is a fraud, a fake, a self-serving charlatan. As America and the rest of the world catch on to what we have known all along, these will be very dangerous times.
In other words, he speaks with a forked tongue.
He's able to lie to everyone at the same time in one very long, very boring, never ending, self adoring, platitudinous speech.
If the plan was to put the screws to the Afghan govt then a private word would have sufficed.

He's a professional community agitator. He just plays a president on TV.
He’s voting present again. He is sending troops so that we can surrender.
What was that painting he liked so much? Maybe, Yes, No?
The disgusting part is that troops are being deployed next year fighting under ridiculously complicated restaints under the auspices of President Zero and his ship of fools.
Obama did not explain how he reached that determination.
We don't need no steenkin boots on the ground when we can bomb them remotely.
They used the same math they used to figure out how many jobs were saved. They cut the head off a chicken and counted the number of blood spatters. They multiplied that number by 1, and then by 10,000. Obomas daughters added up the totals, and they got 30,274. They simply rounded that down to 30,000 so the left would understand it better.
It's all very simple. The numbers come out right everytime. Just ask the MSM.
