The racing yacht, the Kingdom Of Bahrain, owned by Sail Bahrain and crewed by the five Britons, was stopped by Iranian naval vessels last Wednesday as it sailed from Bahrain to Dubai.
The crew members are still in Iran and are understood to be safe and well. Their families have been informed. The Foreign Office said the yacht might have "inadvertently" strayed into Iranian waters.
The sailors were heading to Dubai to join the Dubai-Muscat Offshore Sailing Race. One of the men onboard has been named as David Bloomer, believed to be a radio presenter in Bahrain.
A source later confirmed the other four detained crew members as Oliver Smith, Oliver Young, Sam Usher and Luke Porter.
The detention of the sailors will further raise tensions between Iran and the West, with the country coming under increasing pressure over its plans to build ten new nuclear fuel plants.
Foreign Secretary David Miliband said that officials had contacted their Iranian counterparts as soon as they became aware of the situation.
He said: "Our ambassador in Tehran has raised the issue with the Iranian foreign ministry and we have discussed the matter with the Iranian embassy in London. I hope this issue will soon be resolved. We will remain in close touch with the Iranian authorities, as well as the families."
It is not the first time that Britons have been captured by the Iranian authorities while at sea. Iran took 15 British service personnel hostage at gunpoint on March 23 2007 and held them for 13 days.

A Look at Iran

Where have I seen this before?
When will the Communist in Chief say that the British Sailors were acting stupidly?
Wow—real Lawrences of Arabia/Persia!
Iran needs an ass kicking, unfortunately Russia seems to be what’s preventing that from happening. When will Russia recognise that they should be siding with the west?
This quote from kiss of the dragon applies more now than ever
There is a time for diplomacy and a time for action. Diplomacy is dead.
In the 19th century England went to war with Ethiopia when the mad emperor Theodore seized and held a few Britons. That involved a major invasion force being assembled at huge cost and then transported to Africa.
But a principal was at stake.
Today principals such as national sovereignty or the dignity and rights of each citizen/subject aren’t considered worth bothering with; “statesmen” have other things on their mind (like global non-warming)...
If they were in Iranian waters when confronted then they have absolutely no one to blame but themselves. It’s certainly no secret how Iran responds to those who wander into their territory. Seems like someone would have warned them to give the dividing line a wide berth.
Oh no! I hope it wasn't the principal of MY school!!! ;-)
Iran missed a chance to appear civilized and win the hearts of liberals. They could have just boarded the racing boat, did a quick search and then wish them luck in the race after taking a few pictures of some handshaking and hugs. Seriously, they missed a chance to appear to be the good guy, but instead they acted like a bunch of muslims.
Exactly. There is no excuse for “straying off course” in today’s world.
Rule Britannia
The UK government’s reponse :
“We demand these prisoners be converted to Islam at once...or be beheaded and taxed for the global warming their execution will cause. NOW....who’s up for some tea and cricket?”
