Thirty minutes after the referendum finished at midday, Swiss television reported: The initiative would appear to be accepted. There is a positive trend. Its a huge surprise.
According to the respected gfs.bern polling institute an estimated 59 per cent of voters backed the ban. A majority of cantons were also in support of the initiative.
A majority have voted for a nationwide ban on the construction of minarets, said the institutes director Claude Longchamp, speaking on Swiss Radio DRS.
For the Swiss constitution to be changed, the majority of the electorate and a majority of the cantons are required to vote yes. A survey two weeks ago showed 53 per cent said they would reject it. Both the government and parliament had rejected the initiative. Commentators had said the country risked international pariah status and a backlash across the Muslim world if a yes vote was achieved.

I never saw any comments for this article, shame as I would have loved to have read some layabout scruffy smelling liberal crying about this.
As for the muslims then they’ll be showing their religion of peace again I suspect.
About time a country let the people vote and that country says we want to keep our nation, customs, and traditions.
Now maybe one day we could get to vote on things like this too.
Puts Switzerland on a place I want to go now.
they couldn’t get any more bias in their rpeorteing on this oculd they?
this paper also has link to pictures about global warming.
Guess this paper never heard of the scam uncovered now or the hypocrisy associated with it..
Islam is not just a religion though is it.
It’s an agenda of not fitting in and trying to change other countries to be like their agenda .
It is law.
that is important to know.
Islam is a law which they look to enforce onto others, it’s not really a religion as such .
They might believe in a God but there are strict laws which is enforced onto others including things like the death penalty for not getting married.
Freedom of religion is one thing.
trying to change laws and take us back into the 3rd century is another.
Believe me I’m form the UK and have seen how areas have been taken over, people have been killed because they were white or Christian, or even of they got lost in their area.
Churches have been attacked and burned
Pubs have been forced to close or been attacked, firebombed.
They do not need ot keep using guns they just need to keep using our laws against us and use the immigration system.
That Burka is scary. I hear some cities are having a bit of a problem with gays (like Dubai) because the women/girls are all locked up. Reaping what they have sown.
No, the question is how the Swiss ruling class is going to react.
Jesse Helms was my hero........loved that old gentleman and unabashed conservative......
A great day! God Bless Switzerland.
Let the good news go forth!

Good for the Swiss, hope they don’t blow something up in retaliation.
Freedom of religion is good, but islam is not a religion.
It is a political movement that hides behind an (ir)religious banner.
Not sure that moving on is part of their plan. More like remaking the country as they wish it to be and ruling over the non islamic population.
I hope our country can take a stand one day, the sooner the better. Good for Switzerland.
“It is Un American to say that a mosque cannot build a minaret but a church can put up a steeple. Next step is a Federal Church of America.”
Switzerland is not America, and is not beholden to the Constitution of the United States....
“Commentators had said the country risked international pariah status and a backlash across the Muslim world if a yes vote was achieved.”
And this would be a bad thing because...?
...And you say we don’t need a revolution?
....And political movements can be banned on the grounds of national security...
Ok, so the Swiss won’t let them build tall, pointy towers on top of the mosques that are already in place.
Can someone tell me why this should seem like something more than a hollow victory?
