Switzerland appears to have backed minaret ban

Voters in Switzerland appeared to have backed a call to ban minarets from mosques, according to early exit poll results.

Thirty minutes after the referendum finished at midday, Swiss television reported: “The initiative would appear to be accepted. There is a positive trend. It’s a huge surprise.”

According to the respected gfs.bern polling institute an estimated 59 per cent of voters backed the ban. A majority of cantons were also in support of the initiative.

“A majority have voted for a nationwide ban on the construction of minarets,” said the institute’s director Claude Longchamp, speaking on Swiss Radio DRS.

For the Swiss constitution to be changed, the majority of the electorate and a majority of the cantons are required to vote ‘yes’. A survey two weeks ago showed 53 per cent said they would reject it. Both the government and parliament had rejected the initiative. Commentators had said the country risked international pariah status and a backlash across the Muslim world if a ’yes’ vote was achieved.

who cares if they spread their hate in a building with a minaret or in a strip mall. The building style is not the issue.

But require special circumstances to actually carry concealed, such as being in the military or working in security.

Not in Switzerland. Every home has a gun.

They also let their citizens own guns.

Actually, Switzerland requires every man to maintain a govt. issue weapon since they do not have a standing army. It's kinda like they "cling to them guns and stuff...."

"We love this country, almost more than our own. Our children were born here.”

Parasites. Once the "host" country is totally destroyed by their "love", they'll move on to another.

They’ve stayed away from wars for over a century, despite two really big brouhahas exploding all around them. The Swiss know more than how to make cheese.

hilarious! particularly since women passed this vote, and this in a country that only gave women the right to vote in 1971, with a few hold out cantons waiting until the late 80’s. Let’s see the “liberals” complain now.

I agree, but look throughout Europe where Sharia law has been put in place. Even Catholic leaders have stated there is nothing wrong with Sharia law, which is insane and does not go with the Word of God.

Furthermore, Sharia Law, banking and other parts of Islam are being pushed daily in the USA. Christians need to pray and take a stand now, if not, the future belongs to the 1.6 billion Muslims. Why? Because they are dogmatic and Christians aren't dogmatic. Most of all, Islamic teachings do not include coexisting with others, only we believe we can coexist with others, which is OK, but we have to know our enemies and understand there is a time to take a stand against those enemies who have declared a Jihad against us.

Good job Swiss. You ignored your greedy, un-patriotic businesses like Swatch, who advocated for the minarets for "diversity" sake.

Now go further--ban ALL mosque construction until churches are alowed to be built in Saudi Arabia. NO CHURCHES = NO MOSQUES. Period.

Do I have to be the first to say this is wrong? Our Founding Fathers, following Masonic principles would spit on the idea. They believed in things like freedom of religion. The right to assemble. Sound off any bells?
Where I am from in the Northeast, until recently there was always a Jewish part of town, Black part of town, Italian part of town etc... left over from waves of immigration when many did not assimilate. It is Un American to say that a mosque cannot build a minaret but a church can put up a steeple. Next step is a Federal Church of America.
I also believe our Founding Fathers would know what to do when Islamists get out of control. They already demonstrated what they would do. Crush them militarily, burn down property and get them to stop their shiite. There is also that clause about “all enemies, both forein and domestic”.

yeah freedom of religion is a good thing. unfortunately Islam is a little bit more than just a religion (and really doesn´t fit well into our societies). so to ban minarettes is a good start at least (true it would be bether to kick out most of the muslims but at least its a start). don´t get me wrong i would not care if they would build a Buddhistic temple of a size so you could see it from the orbit ;-) in my city. but the difference is budism is just a religion Islam is a life style.

why can’t we have a vote in this country asking if we should have women running around with their faces covered or even having more and more mosques being built with saudi money.

Infact ban all mosques until places like Saudi let churches be built and Christians can have some safety

still as long as we have this muslim terrorist loving idiot in the white house I suspect more and more muslims will be given visas and green cards

Do you have any doubt that, with a closet Muslim CIC, this same controversy will be coming to the USA? I’m just waiting for the other Islamic shoe to drop. For one thing, Zero can’t (or won’t) just make it legal for Mexican illegals to be here....he’ll make it legal for ALL illegals (including Muzzies).

I read this as a ban on marionettes. I thought, “Good! They are creepy! Oh...nevermind.”

It’s getting to be an issue... with me. For instance, I refuse to bank or shop at any building that has a Mosque-style structure. I’m just funny that way.
