Dakota Voice ^ | November 28, 2009 | Star Parker

Our wake-up call should be that the factors that saved and transformed Michael Oher’s life stand in stark contrast to the government solutions we hear from Washington about dealing with our problems relating to poverty and education.

I’ve followed Star Parker for years. She is a heroine of mine.

I’m with the previous poster...Palin/Parker!

One of the things that probably helped his IQ in the Christian school (aside from an improved environment!) was that they made him learn and speak standard English. This was a feature of Catholic schools, too, and probably accounts for the fact that black graduates of Catholic schools have a much higher average income than their peers from public schools.

Speaking standard English doesn’t change the native capacity, obviously, but it certainly changes the ability to understand and express things. A child brought up in the woods by wild animals could be as intelligent as Einstein and would still be considered retarded because he wouldn’t have the language either to understand or express human concepts. Ghetto black English is a very limited patois that is only a functional language (for ordering fast food or cursing out your girlfriend, for example) and cannot be extended to concepts. For one thing, it has a very incomplete system of tenses and even of number.

I’ve never understood why blacks defend it, because it was simply the result of having “learned” English from slave owners who probably rarely spoke to their slaves in complete sentences and permitted them no formal education. This was followed by years of linguistic isolation, particularly for rural blacks, as a result of segregation and the fact that these same rural people moved to the cities in the 50s and 60s and continued to remain isolated. “Black English” is a tremendous handicap that probably results in the misdiagnosis of retardation in many cases and has significantly impeded the integration of poorer blacks into the mainstream economic system.

This is the one movie I will go to the theater to see. A Star Parker fan here. And I love Sandra Bullock. Good on all of them.

I agree with your statements about ghetto-talk. It holds black children down. But, among inner city blacks, it appears to be a badge of honor to talk in that language, and on the other hand a disgrace to sound like “white people”.

It seems to me somewhat similar to teenage slang. As soon as parents start using a certain slang word, teenagers come up with a new one, because the old one isn’t cool any more. But teenagers grow out of it as they age and move out of the teens.

Bill Cosby has spoken several times about how the black community is holding their children down. Peer pressure is used to discourage any of them from excelling in school or from learning proper English.

It would be very difficult for a person to rise above such pressure, and so I have a deep respect for anyone like Star Parker who has managed to do it.

The Black hustlers can’t afford for Blacks to be educated or they would be out of work. During Slavery the slave states outlawed education for fear they would be able to read maps and escape, same today.

Mrs. Reo and I saw “The Blind Side” last weekend, and it’s terrific. This weekend we plan to watch Michael play for the Ravens in the Sunday night game. What a great story!

It’s getting much worse than that. Just wait until kids think “texting” short cuts are proper English (probably already happening), and teachers accept papers written in text-ese....

Star Parker -- yet another example of the Babe Conservative Female. Why is it that conservative women tend to be so attractive? I used to think it was luck-of-the-draw. Now I understand that it has to do with something deeper. It's no coincidence.

I always enjoy Star's columns when I see them.

I hate texting. It’s the dumbing down of America, IMHO.

I strongly believe in school vouchers with good reason. I went to a Philadelphia public high school. I wasted four years of my life.
