Less of a Catholic: Why Rep. Kennedy is wrong
NY Post ^ | November 28, 2009 | JOHN WILSON

Posted on 11/28/2009 2:01:27 AM PST by Scanian

News broke this week that Thomas Tobin, the Catho lic bishop of Providence, RI, had in 2007 asked Rep. Patrick Kennedy to refrain from receiving Communion because of the congressman's support for legalized abortion. The ensuing howls of protest almost universally missed the point.

Some Catholic writers charged that Tobin was sowing division within the church and "politicizing" the sacrament. On the pro-choice left, Tobin was flayed for everything from "religious blackmail" to -- inexplicably -- violating the separation of church and state.

Perhaps the strangest comment came from former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who predicted that if pols like Kennedy started listening to the bishop, "nobody would vote for Catholics" because voters would fear they'd "be guided by [their] faith."

If “separation of church and state” is the guideline, the pols should shut up - - - they have no business interfering with the governance of religious groups, who have complete discretion in determining who is and who is not a valid member of the congregation. The ex-Catholic (as defined by their ecclesiastical leaders) pols can look for some other label to woo the voters, or they can stop promoting repugnant policies. But they want to have it both ways. So sad, too bad.

Cuomo’s comment sinks his reputation completely, He is admitting that in order to get elected, he denied their own faith.

IMO Cuomo and Kennedy are heretics and ex-Catholics with disordered minds. They each have no business in politics. Like Pelosi who also has a warped and twisted view of the world, these politicians demonstrate what mealy-mouthed means. Say one thing and do another; rule against common sense; rule against your own soul. Declare that your specious reasoning and justification are absolutely correct! What do the clergy know about the Commandments and what they have to do to walk their walk?

I wonder what drugs these people need and consume in order to get through their miserable, unhappy days? I pray that they each repent.

More evidence of the amazing arrogance of modern-day politicians. They even think they can shove their supposed religious denominations around with impunity.

The drug of power, which Kissinger called the best aphrodisiac, is probably more than sufficient for them.

And the fact that 40% of Americans are happy to characterize themselves as liberal or somewhat liberal makes me think that the sick, twisted politicians you mention are right in step with a big slice of our population.

That statement is just breathless.

Doesn't the message from Christ, "What profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?" haunt these people?

Nothing haunts these people except the fear that they'll have to take a position without consulting the polls, and the fear that they won't be able to give away enough taxpayer money to win the next election.

I reckon you're right.

How do they become so wrapped up in their own world that they cannot see what lies in store for them?

No belief in God, or the idea that God thinks the way they think.

Either way it's a dangerous road to travel.

The Catholic Church has not gone far enough, he should be excommunicated, along with every other libtard pol who supports abortion, queer rights and other anti-church teachings. The Protestant churches should then follow their example. If they want separation of church and state let’s give it to them.

No -- his faith is liberalism and in fidelity to it, he was forced to deny his church.

Do these hypocrite politicians really want "Separation of Church and State"?

Let's see, there is a Commandment, THOU SHALL NOT KILL. Should we release all those convicted of Murder to enjoy SEPARATION?

There is a Commandment, THOU SHALL NOT STEAL. Should we release all those convicted of Stealing to enjoy SEPARATION?

Or how about, "BEARING FALSE WITNESS"? Would the Congress be able to their vote on their agendas, if they were required to tell the truth in promoting legislation, merely to enjoy SEPARATION?

His statement tracks well with Cuomo’s famous 1984 pronouncement that, while he's opposed to abortion in his “private observance” as a Catholic, he sees no need “to press the case that our morality should be everybody else’s” — i.e., to work for an end to abortion in law.

How's that working out? From 84 until now please give us all you have done to end abortion in law.

"The fact that I disagree with the hierarchy on some Non-Negotiable issues of faith does not make me any less of a Catholic,in name only"

There fixed it.

To my way of thinking, a politician who adheres to his faith except when he’s in office, is the same as a man who is thrifty except when he’s in Vegas, or a man who’s faithful to his wife except when he’s not home.
IIRC, Moses had a comfortable living and a great office.

“The Catholic Church has not gone far enough, he should be excommunicated...”

IANACL (I am not a canon lawyer), but if I recall correctly, he has already excommunicated himself by publicly working against the teachings of the Church.

If my bishop told me not to take communion, I’d be too ashamed to let the news media know.

Your faith is supposed to help you in choosing what is right and what is wrong.

Murder is wrong. Abortion is wrong, what part of killing an innocent ,because the mother wanted a boy ,doesn’t Cuomo and Kennedy understand.?

If they wish to allow for Mother’s killing their children they should become Muslims, killing doesnt seem to bother them much.

Going against the tenets of their faith to get votes, makes one wonder what else they will do for those votes. Accept bribes? Cheat, Steal, Covet their neighbor’s wife ?

I thought the breakdown was more on the order of 40% conservative, 36% moderate and 24% liberal on a recent poll.
