Philippines Massacre: Women Thought They Were Safe. They Were Wrong

He knew that powerful and ruthless people wanted him dead and that he was risking everything by standing for election — but to one practical challenge at least, Ismael Mangudadatu thought he had a solution.

If he went in person to register as a candidate he would be inviting an attack by his enemies — the Ampatuan clan who have a near-monopoly on elected posts in the region. Instead, after consultation with his family and advisers, Mr Mangudadatu decided to send his wife and two sisters.

The local police refused to provide an escort and the Philippines Army declined a request for protection. But how much harm could befall a group of women? For good measure, the two family lawyers who were women and Mr Mangudadatu’s aunt — who was pregnant, like one of his sisters — went along for the ride with other supporters and relatives.

As a further safeguard, 27 journalists were invited. “Under our tradition, Muslim women are respected,” Mr Mangudadatu said. “They should not be harmed, just like innocent children and the elders. They will not harm us if journalists are watching.”

Unfortunately, the candidate was wrong and 57 people were brutally murdered, including a pregnant woman. I am surprised this has gotten almost no news coverage.

My wife is from another part of Mindanao, the island where the massacre took place, so our family certainly heard about it. All I can figure is that the MSM doesn’t consider this story important. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that not only can the media manipulate the news with the stories they cover, they can also do it by choosing which stories they DON’T cover.

What would be the motivation for lack of coverage by the MSM? The only place I have heard anything about this was on news radio programs, and even that seemed to be two days late.

The MSM hate the Philippinos for their support of our efforts in So. Vietnam. The PHILCAGS (Philippino Civic Action Groups) performed well in helping to build roads, wells, and housing, and fought against the VC/NVA, taking both KIAs and WIAs.

The only Philippines worth mentioning by the MSM might be the Filipino Scouts of WW2. You never hear of the massive resistance by the whole nation to the Japanese invaders and murderers.

Why would anyone be suppressed when muslims are involved.

Suggestion to any peaceful Muslims out there... Find a peaceful religion.

Please don’t insult the animal kingdom in comparing the two. Barbaric demons will do nicely. Ah, the religion of peace is at it again.

One must keep in mind that Mindanao, even though it haves some nice and safe cities, is not typical of the country.
There is a large population of Muzies in the west.

I have lived on Cebu, just to the north of Mindanao, and have yet to see a Muzie.
While this is said to be a political killing, I have no doubt that Muzies were involved.

Brutal massacre of 57--no coverage by state-run media.

Ringleader of Falluja murders and subsequent display of burned bodies gets bloody nose from SEALS--stop the presses.

Where is the wrath of NOW.

Where is the pack of shrieking Pelosi-Harpies.

The mother of one of my coworkers is from Leyte, so she has been watching this story very closely. She told me that the family responsible for this has committed a number of serious crimes over the years, but they have family members in virtually every level of government, so nothing is ever done to stop them.

If I read the articles correctly, the candidate and his family were Muslims, and the attackers were also Muslims.

Yeah, if these women were being denied abortions by Christians, they’d be on the next flight there. But as soon as the RoP enters the picture, the blinders go on.

Liberals - if it weren’t for double standards, they’d have no standards at all.

It’s all over the news here.

And it’s big. You see, this is a “safe” Muslim area in Mindanao, where there is no terrorist fighting, and the government helps the clans keep it free of terror.

This governor has only been in a few years, but helped steal the election for President Arroyo, so I guess he figured she’d keep quiet if he eliminated the opposition. Gloria doesn’t have a good reputation for figuring out who’s doing all the “extrajudicial killings” of reporters and activists.

The local “self defense” militias in Minadano are supposed to keep the place safe from those making war, but are at the beck and call of their clan.

The governor’s son wanted to stop the other clan from running against him, so it sounds like he got the guys together and they dug graves. But the opposition got wind of it, especially when the police and army refused to give him protection to register as a candidate. I guess they thought he’d go with his own militia/body guards, and they needed a lot of folks to get rid of them (and if caught they’d say they would be shooting in self defense).

But the other guy figured to send the wife and reporters, figuring they’d be safe. But sonny boy figured he was above the law and killed them all, plus a dozen passers by.

The danger is that this could cause a big war between the clans, not to mention take down the government if they don’t prosecute. The reporters are mad, even the Manila Bulletin, which usually supports the president in everything, but lost one of their reporters.

I wish I could say this was a “Muslim” thing, but alas, the Catholics here in Luzon do the same thing, but usually on a smaller scale (one or two murders at a time)...our nephew was killed when he was caught in the crossfire when the mayor sent hit men against the guy running against him, and the mayor is a leading Catholic citizen. He’s been charged with the murder, but three years later we are still waiting for justice, and the US embassy is doing nothing, even though our nephew is a naturalized US citizen (and physician, not political).

It’s about who gets to skim money off of all the government contracts.
