I-Team: Dead Farmers Get Millions From Tax Dollars
CBS ^ | 11/24/09 | Steven Stock

It's no secret that many times the federal government can spend your tax dollars in ways that might leave you scratching your head or even make you angry.

But wait until you hear what I-Team Investigator Stephen Stock dug up and who is getting your money now.

William Roderick Kent was 87-years-old when he died. He now rests in a mausoleum at Woodlawn Park Cemetery North along Miami's 8th Street.

Kent lived in a nice home in Coconut Grove. He owned property throughout South Florida, including a place in multi-story building in Coral Gables. So why -- even two years after his death -- is William R. Kent getting money from the government?

Records show that William R. Kent continued to be paid US federal farm bill aid. Exactly, $43,930.49 in farm aid to be precise, 2-years after he was buried in the mausoleum at Woodlawn Park North.

"It just shows you how broken this system of farm subsidies is," said Richard Wiles, of the Environmental Working Group.

Wiles is a co-founder of the Environmental Working Group (EWG) a non-profit watchdog group based in Washington, D.C.

We have a similar program in NY. There was a VERY NASTY penalty if the heirs wanted to opt out and sell the property before the term was up.

Mentions people who are being paid who aren't even farming.

Is this reporter ignorant? We've done that forever....All kinds of farm programs around.

Shouldnt be. Take in the death certificate and let them make a copy and then cancel out. That is all there is to it. Those programs are voluntary, not mandatory. Sounds like y’alls is in a big hurry to sell the property. Is there no family value attached to it, or is getting the money all that is important?

I don’t have as much of a problem if it’s a long term agreement and the heirs collect the proceeds.

I have a big issue when people who don’t have a farm or who never farmed are collecting.

I view agriculture as a military sensitive industry. You need to produce your own food and not rely on other countries. And preferably, you produce more food each year than is really required by your population so that you still have plenty in a bad weather year. So I’m ok with some forms of agricultural subsidies and/or protections.

Maybe 50 years ago, but not anymore. Much trade goes on during any war. By subsidizing our farmers, we keep farmers in Africa, South America and Asia poor and dependent. This does not benefit us in the long run.

Take that tired old we-are-all-one-world nonsense somewhere else. If the farmers in those countries want a better shake let THEM get off their asses and make it happen.

Woodrow Wilson and his apostles are still wrong.

As the U.N. grows stronger, you can't count on that trade. As cheap labor countries like China become the ones we are dependent on for food, you can't count on that trade.

We don't keep farmers in Africa, South America and Asia poor and dependent by growing excess food. Their governments keep them impoverished by poor policies. They could erect trade barriers and not import food, if that was the problem. They squander their resources, and then ask us to give them food free. They would starve if not for our excess production.

Well, that’s great!

With so many dead farmers receiving subsidies nationwide, by removing them from the roles we can reassign lots of these staff to oversee our new health-care plan!

Odd, we don’t hear Neil “The Canadian” Young singing “Let’s impeach the president” now.

Why that?
