One of the world's leading promoters of the anthropogenic global warming myth claimed Monday he is convinced the e-mail messages involved in the growing international scandal ClimateGate "are genuine," and he's "dismayed and deeply shaken by them."
So said George Monbiot, a writer and environmental activist many consider to be Great Britain's Al Gore.
Contrary to what newspapers like the New York Times and the Washington Post are telling their readers, Monbiot accurately said there's "no use pretending that this isn’t a major blow. The emails extracted by a hacker from the climatic research unit at the University of East Anglia could scarcely be more damaging" (h/t Andrew Bolt via Marc Morano):
There appears to be evidence here of attempts to prevent scientific data from being released(2,3), and even to destroy material that was subject to a freedom of information request(4).
Worse still, some of the emails suggest efforts to prevent the publication of work by climate sceptics(5,6), or to keep it out of a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(7). I believe that the head of the unit, Phil Jones, should now resign. Some of the data discussed in the emails should be re-analysed.
In fairness, this has not changed Monbiot's view of the bogeyman: "The hacked emails are a hard knock, but the science of global warming withstands much more than that."
If this is how he believes science works, you can certainly understand his continued belief in it.
Fortunately, the more alarmists who admit the seriousness of this scandal, the more likely global warming-obsessed media will have to more aggressively investigate the truth of the matter.
If this eventually happens, we'll see what this so-called science can withstand.
One is reminded of Richard Feynman’s quote when he was investigating the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster:
“[R]eality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled.”
Would it ever be sweet if someone could attach some of them EMails directly to or from Al Gore.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of the AGW babblers are taking the “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!” line, and the Media seems to be quite content to follow along.....
I think the developing storyline will be that they weren’t hiding or changing information out of malice...only to dumb things down for us dumb hicks in flyover country...and we’ll be told ‘this happens all the time’
To me, the bunker mentality seen in the CRU emails is evidence of frightened conspirators, not confident scientists.
If globull warming is such an unassailable fact for these people, then why the concerted effort to hide unfavorable statistics and silence critics?
Me thinks their whole GW philosophy is a house of cards built on shifting sand.
There are so many instances of the UK having a freer and more open press than the US. I wonder why.
Certainly they have their share of leftists. More than their share. And yet they are not afraid of an open exchange of ideas.
Here in the US, the establishment media has a genuine fear of anything that even faintly resembles real journalism and real debate on the issues.
Why?
There’s so much Political Science these days that I wonder if there are any true scientists left anymore.
Actually I think it is because very few in the media have enough science education to point out flaws and frauds. I'll give them this one on the current state of modern man: Nature Deficit Disorder. It is one thing to learn science in a classroom and a whole other thing to "discover" it on your own.
There are times in years past that discussing GW with friends the astounding ignorance of basic earth science startled me. What was even more perplexing as an EHS professional was the ignorance of the policy pushers. I spent more time teaching the science to some fool who rejected a permit application because they didn't know their earth science.
Then, out of curiosity I read Last Child in the Woods. From my own experience there is a lot of truth in that crazy notion of NDD. IMHO it has contributed to a whole generation of people who are clueless about real earth science. And that makes them gullible to hoaxes the likes of Global Warming.
Did it not hit his/her “G” Spot.?
I think it’s pretty well established that the growing ranks of lightly-employed “scientists” have a much better chance of earning an income if they bang the “Global Warming” gong than if they actually do real work.
But my question is, why is this being reported in the UK and not in the US (talking about establishment media in the 2 places).
Tainted scientists and all who reference their published papers.
I'm not really sure that is the case. I don't remember the UK being that "freer" when it came to Iraq. Nonetheless one theory for what you are seeing might be due to the fact that the UK is out in front in instituting Global Warming fascism and Brits are starting to feel some of the pain and ask questions.
It's one thing in America to buy products advertising their "greeness" and to put your groceries in canvas bags but this still costs relatively little to feel good about yourself by "going green". In America we have yet to really be hurt (yet) by stupid green legislation so the American press just sees it as another social difference they can exploit and feel smart about themselves.
In other words we ain't hurtin' enough yet in America. Don't ever forget that poll in California where they asked people if they'd give up large screen televisions to "save the planet". The response was a very definitive no friggin' way. Once they come for the televisions, the television media will wake up. ;-) Just a theory.
Climate change scientists face calls for public inquiry over data manipulation claims.
Thousands of documents stolen from the University of East Anglia (UEA) also seem to show that academics on both sides of the Atlantic discussed deleting sensitive emails to evade Freedom of Information requests from climate change sceptics.
Lord Lawson, the former chancellor, led calls for a full investigation into the leaked files, saying that the good reputation of British science was under threat.
...In one email Professor Phil Jones, director of the university's respected Climatic Research Unit, referred to a "trick" he applied to raw data to "hide the decline" in global temperatures.
The email correspondence also apparently showed that Prof Jones lobbied for the sacking of a journal editor who published papers that questioned the scientific consensus on global warming.
"On the face of it, looks like the raw data was being manipulated in order to prove what they wanted to prove," said Lord Lawson, Margaret Thatcher's former chancellor who has reinvented himself as a critic of climate change science.
"They were talking about destroying various files in order to prevent data being revealed under the Freedom of Information Act and they were trying to prevent other dissenting scientists from having their articles published in learned journals.
"It may be that there's an innocent explanation for all this... but there needs to be a fundamental independent inquiry to get at the truth."

I believe that the minimum outcome of the CRU files is a dramatic increase in transparency in climate science. Which would eventually lead to a permanent end to this AGW scam.

He should be. There's no way, by "science", that such a thing as "Anthopogenic Global Warming" was evern proven. He should have known that and therefore not been shaken by this scandal. He would have already known that it had to all have been fabricated.
