A leading climate change scientist said hackers breaking into a university's computer server and then posting documents online show the nasty politics of global warming.

Trenberth, a well-respected atmospheric scientist, said it did not appear that all the documents stolen from the university had been distributed on the Internet by the hackers.

How long does it take to copy 60MB of files? Ha ha. Maybe gigabytes will be dribbled out across the coming weeks like the folks did with the Acorn tapes.

It doesn’t take much to be called a scientist these days. Apparently using the scientific method is no longer required.

No, someone can actually manage to flunk Divinity, and become a world-famous authority.

One problem is that people who cannot pass a Science course opt out and major in Journalism. There really is no such field any more...it's just intensive compussive programming by the Zampolits.

Yep. True science doesn't exclude unfavorable data or seek a predetermined outcome. There is also no "consensus" in real science. There can be widespread agreement and even accepted theories but there is no such thing as total agreement.

Even with the widespread acceptance of the dinosaur extinction caused by asteroid theory, there are still some big name detractors.

That would be ideal, but there may be other reasons some of those files weren't included. They might, for instance, help to ID the leaker, or they might be irrelevant.

Time will tell.

Lord Monckdon (SP?), one of the leading AGW skeptics, who might well have inside knowledge, yesteday wrote that the documents were probably leaked, not hacked. A number of other writers have also come to that conclusion for the following reaons: 1) hackers usually reveal themselves, while this source hasn't, and 2) the file is entitled, IIRC, "FOI 2009," indicating the source knew the materials were subject to British FOI requests.

NASA's Gavin Schmidt contention doesn't make any sense does it? Why would hackers get the information and immediately attempt to post it on a site run by the hoaxers?

Why take that chance? If there were hackers, they knew Gavin and others would know about it without hours or maybe minutes of their disseminating it elsewhere.

So the motivation for revealing information affects the veracity and import of the information how?

As a lawyer who's been involved in some caes where an adversary's information has been revealed by a confidential source, I can say that such a source usually has one or more very specific, personal, and often highly vindictive reasons for revealing the information. Thus, it definitely needs to be tested for accuracy before being used. However, once it passes that test, which this material appears clearly to have done, then the motive for the original disclosure becomes mostly irrelevant.

Anthony Watts’ has an article on his website that explores three theories:
1. A hacker grabbed the files
2. It was an inside job
3. Someone at CRU had packaged the files in preparation for a possible response to a FOI request, but accidentally moved the file to a public side of their server.

#1 is the favorite of the warmers - it makes them feel like victims.
#2 is the favorite of disclosurists - it has a romantic or hero feel to it.
#3 may be the most likely reason - there is a precident of CRU doing something similar in the past, and the name of the file itself add credence. Also the lack of personal e-mails in the package also backs this theory.

From a legal standpoint, #3 presents the least complications.

I hope the worst offenders are stripped of their credentials and thrown in jail for a good long time.
