A leading climate change scientist said hackers breaking into a university's computer server and then posting documents online show the nasty politics of global warming.

Sounds like ACORN. LOL
It is humorous to see that, so far, nobody has denied the authenticity of these leaked documents.
The only angle they have is the context, which, as you said, means they must reveal more to put these into context.
I imagine there is a massive e-mail cleanup underway around the world!
Yup, someone stole the truth and we are gonna find out who ti was and punish them.
No different that Dan Rather’s “Just because the evidence is fake doesn’t mean it isn’t true!”
Mark
They will try to take the heat off of themselves and obscure what the files reveal by pointing the finger at the hacker. “Don’t look at me! There was a crime committed by a hacker!”
Or as was suggested by a right wing pundit, “Someone got a conscience”
Politics is a double edge sword. It is used for good when truth is reveled.
Headline:
“Liars accuse theives of stealing and exposing the truth for political purposes!”
Yeah. Its all about politics. Which is why the New York Times, which was a conduit for the hoax, Media Matters and the Center for American Progress were screaming from day one about the emails being “out of context” (if they were real at all), a criminal break-in and this entire matter being of no real importance because like, you know, the science is settled, the debate is over.
According to some theories, hackers weren’t involved at all. The CRU put out the Russian hacker story. Someone in the group or close to the group might have had his or her conscience bother them to the extent he or she couldn’t tolerate the hoax anymore.
You cannot be both a scientist and one who hides the data.
When the left does the same kind of thing no one on the left ever gets outraged over it.
So the motivation for revealing information affects the veracity and import of the information how?
This “scientist, “Kevin Trenberth,
It doesn’t take much to be called a scientist these days. Apparently using the scientific method is no longer required.
A hacker who may not exist. From Watts' Up With That:
Author CJ. Licensed under Creative Commons.I have a theory.
With the blogosphere all atwitter about the emails and data stolen from the Climatic Research Institute at the University of East Anglia, two theories have become dominant describing the origin of the incident.
1. CRU was hacked and the data stolen by skilled hackers, perhaps an individual or more insidiously some sophisticated group, such as Russian agents.
2. An insider leaked the information to the NSM (non-mainstream media)
Theory number one is the preferred explanation of the defenders of CRU. This allows them to portray CRU as victims of illegal acts. It allows them to scream bloody murder and call for an investigation of the crime. How can we take the fruits of hideous crime seriously? The end does not justify the means!
One of our favorite writers, Gavin Schmidt, has expanded on this theme with the report:
He [Gavin] said the breach at the University of East Anglia was discovered after hackers who had gained access to the correspondence sought Tuesday to hack into a different server supporting realclimate.org, a blog unrelated to NASA that he runs with several other scientists pressing the case that global warming is true.
The intruders sought to create a mock blog post there and to upload the full batch of files from Britain. That effort was thwarted, Dr. Schmidt said, and scientists immediately notified colleagues at the University of East Anglias Climatic Research Unit.

I believe the above statement by Gavin to be a big bunch of hooey. I believe the hack was a posting of the same blog comment which was posted at The Air Vent . . .
Interesting. This statement indicates that they know exactly what docs were leaked and that they have backups. It initially sounded as if they were going to claim that the server files had been destroyed by the "hacker," but I guess that won't fly.
A scientist who hides data....cannot be a scientist.
Imagine Einstein standing there...with a tremendous bit of knowledge in his hands...and his solution of “E=McSquare” was actually only fifty percent of the entire discovery.
Imagine someone standing there who has discovered the evil of DDT and pesticide....but they only tell you half of the entire story...to drive home the evil of DDT.
Imagine someone standing there....with vast knowledge over cellphone and their threat to your health....but only wants to tell you half of the story.
You can’t be such a scientist in this case...if you hinder or hold back knowledge.
Interesting stuff. And a hacker doesn’t have to exist for them to use the claim to refocus attention.
