Obama Will Send 34,000 U.S. Troops to Afghanistan
McClatchy ^ | Monday, November 23, 2009

Posted on 11/23/2009 8:13:54 PM PST by kristinn

President Barack Obama met Monday evening with his national security team to finalize a plan to dispatch some 34,000 additional U.S. troops over the next year to what he's called "a war of necessity" in Afghanistan, U.S. officials told McClatchy.

Obama is expected to announce his long-awaited decision on Dec. 1, followed by meetings on Capitol Hill aimed at winning congressional support amid opposition by some Democrats who are worried about the strain on the U.S. Treasury and whether Afghanistan has become a quagmire, the officials said.

The U.S. officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the issue publicly and because, one official said, the White House is incensed by leaks on its Afghanistan policy that didn't originate in the White House.

They said the commander of the U.S.-led international force in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, could arrive in Washington as early as Sunday to participate in the rollout of the new plan, including testifying before Congress toward the end of next week. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry also are expected to appear before congressional committees.

As it now stands, the plan calls for the deployment over a nine-month period beginning in March of three Army brigades from the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky., and the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, N.Y., and a Marine brigade from Camp Lejeune, N.C., for as many as 23,000 additional combat and support troops.

In addition, a 7,000-strong division headquarters would be sent to take command of U.S.-led NATO forces in southern Afghanistan — to which the U.S. has long been committed — and 4,000 U.S. military trainers would be dispatched to help accelerate...

Zbigniew Brzezinski, or ZB, (the same foreign advisor under Jimmy Carter), wants to destabilize Afghanistan / Pakistan, enable construction of an oil pipeline and sever economic ties between Pakistan and China.

The globalist goons, CFR Obama and CFR company are creating a war that is unwinnable. Afghanistan is Vietnam II, just like Vietnam was unwinnable under CFR Lynchin' SOB Johnson and his CFR company.

And the stupid b***tard will have our guys fighting under rules of engagement requiring every trooper to call the f’ing White House before firing on the enemy.

How long would it take for a radio call to reach the White Hut? Two minutes, and that's way too long in a combat situation. Anyway, they would spin the ROE to get the job done. Robin Olds spun the ROE and came up with Operation Bolo back in the Vietnam War.

Afghanistan scenario: Alpha Company, 151st Infantry Regiment, 11th Infantry Division. (fictional)

Cpl. Tristan Winslow: Captain Broughton, Talibs are shooting at us, what do we do, hold our fire?

Capt. Duncan H. Broughton: Negative, damn the Bama's ROE, return fire! Return fire! Storm their positions!

There should be a surtax on liberals, who keep spending all the money. A surtax on Congress would be useful, too.

According to Glenn Beck this morning, these troops will be deployed over a long period of time, NATO will contribute a whopping 1700 troops (photo op for O), and it will include a "war tax" for the wealthy.

A WAR TAX!!!

I thought Obama had big issues with Bush not putting enough troops in Afghan, now he goes way below the minimum needed to win as requested by our commanders. He has no clue what he says and does. I don't see how anyone can figure Obama out. He makes no sense to me, but I'm pretty stupid.

I'm pretty stupid, too. But to me, oBama simply has higher priorities than giving our Troops the immediate FULL support that they've requested. Much more important to oBama is socializing our Nation and bowing subserviently to other heads of state around the world.

The guy is a complete rookie and an embarrassment. But hey, what do I know.

Are these 34,000 fighting troops or meals on wheels troops?

Actually, you’re right Democrats have been warmongers since Woodrow Wilson lied us into World War I. For the life of me, I can’t understand why so many here want to support Obama’s effort to send more blood and treasure into his Afghan war. They should take their “kick me” signs off. Do they really trust Obama to have this power over sending our troops into harm’s way?

Inevitably, they will include meals on wheels troops. The welfare and warfare states are joined at the hip. If you don’t agree, check out the endless stories about U.S. troops building schools and community centers during the Bush years.

If their rules of engagement tie our troops hands behind their backs, it won’t do a dammed bit of good. If they can’t fight to WIN, they should come home tomorrow.

Agree.

This 'war' has gone from simply destroying the Taliban to 'nation building'.

I think this is a trial balloon, used to guage how much flak will come from all quarters, his liberal base, conservatives, as well as national and international support. I personally do not think he will order more troops over before he picks up his “Peace Prize”, and I think ultimately it will be fewer men than 34K.

McCrystal wanted 40,000 COMBAT troops at a minimum, with an additional 15,000 support troops. The original request was for 80,000 combat, with 20,000 support.

McCrystal is not God. He is just another general (shades of Westmoreland) who wants an endless supply of troops and taxpayers money. His main talent before his APPOINTMENT BY OBAMA was covering up details of the Pat Tillman killing. We need to bring the troops not send more to fight in Obama’s War.

You go in with an arterial wound and he tells you to take an aspirin and he’ll get back to you in three months with his final recommendation.

Get ready, thats just around the corner.

Corruption?! I’m shocked! Shocked! I haven’t been so shocked since I found rats in my barn and burned it to the ground in a fit of outrage. If the US government has any corruption in it, all troops should withdraw from the United States, as well. It’s a quagmire.
