A Montgomery County landscaper was sentenced to life in prison Monday for forcing his way into an elderly Wheaton woman's home and murdering her by slamming her head repeatedly against furniture, dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire. ...
An autopsy of the victim, Lila Meizell, 83, showed that she had soot in her lungs, confirming that she had breathed in smoke before she died. She also had trauma to her skull, neck and spinal cord and had suffered multiple rib fractures.
Alvarado showed little emotion during the sentencing hearing, looking down and blinking repeatedly. The native of El Salvador had told McGann earlier that he was worried about what his mother would think of his sentence. McGann also imposed a condition that he not be eligible for parole.
State's Attorney John McCarthy on Monday called the case the most horrific he has seen since taking office. ...
A jury convicted Alvarado last month of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and arson. Testimony showed that he was paid $1,000 by his cousin, Jose Alvarado, to kill Meizell. The cousin, who did yard work for Meizell, had received a $75 check from her earlier and had added two zeros to it before cashing it, then became worried that he would be caught.
Jose Alvarado pleaded guilty in June to first-degree murder in the case and testified against his cousin. Jose Alvarado's wife, Ana Rodas, 32, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of being an accessory after the fact to murder.
Ramon Alvarado also had worked at Meizell's house. He is wanted by immigration officials, an indication that he entered the United States illegally.

Although the reporter waited until the very end to say this, I am still surprised that an editor did not remove it.
As for the sentence, he deserves nothing but the death penalty. This crime was unspeakable.
“The native of El Salvador had told McGann earlier that he was worried about what his mother would think of his sentence.”....
Is that what’s worrying him?.....Hang him!
From the grave, Ted Kennedy smiles.
“A Montgomery County landscaper.....”
Should read: “An illegal alien living in Montgomery County.......” but the writer did his best to legitimize the perp.
So she's not at all concerned that her son beat an old lady nearly to death, and then incinerated her still-living body, she's concerned he got a life sentence?
More of those family values not stopping the border.
Interesting theory on death penalty by H. L. Mencken. Skip down to the “Jack Ketch” paragraph.
parsy, who remembered this bon mot
He’ll probably haver a better life in prison than he would have if forced back to El Salvador.
Probably 100,000 men altogether were murdered in the territory West of the Ohio between 1776 and 1865; probably not 100 murderers were formally executed.
It'd be interesting to Fisk this article.
Cheers!
