A lawyer for one of the five men facing trial for the Sept. 11 attacks says the men plan to plead not guilty and use the trial venue to express their political views.
Attorney Scott Fenstermaker said his client Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali and the others will not deny their role in the 2001 attacks but will tell the jury "why they did it."
He said that the men will explain "their assessment of American foreign policy."
Fenstermaker met with Ali last week at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He has not spoken with the others but said the men have discussed the trial among themselves.
The Justice Department announced earlier this month that the men would face a civilian federal trial in a New York City courthouse. The department did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

The liberals who have defended Holder’s decision said that justice will be done, yadda, yadda, yadda. And they said that fears of these guys using a trial as a platform to spew their views were overblown.
And now we have their attorney saying that the spewing will be a big part of their defense strategy.

A New York lawyer, Scott L. Fenstermaker, has filed court papers saying he was retained by Mr. Ghailani to represent him in the New York case. But federal prosecutors have asked a judge to remove the lawyer, questioning whether he is authorized to act on behalf of the detainee and citing earlier cases in which he tried to represent Mr. Ghailani and other detainees but was prevented by judges from doing so.
Mr. Fenstermaker was suspended as a member of the pool of civilian lawyers who work with military lawyers in defending detainees at Guantánamo, court records show. The military office that represents detainees wrote that his dealings with some of its lawyers had “been counterproductive” and that he had “not been forthright” about his representation of certain detainees.
This is exactly what Holder and Obozo intended to happen. They are scum, and don’t forget, it was the American electorate and the Senate who elected and confirmed them, respectively.
There is plenty of blame to go around.
