Health officials say a Tamiflu-resistant strain of swine flu has spread between hospital patients.
Five patients on a unit treating people with severe underlying health conditions at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff were infected.
Three appear to have acquired the infection in hospital.
They are thought to be the first confirmed cases of person-to-person transmission of a Tamiflu-resistant strain in the world.
There have been several dozen reports around the world of people developing resistance to Tamiflu while taking the drug - but they have not passed on the strain to others.
Just one possible cases of person-to-person transmission of a resistant strain has been recorded - between two people at a US summer camp - and this has never been confirmed.
Two of the University Hospital Wales patients have recovered and have been discharged from hospital, one is in critical care and two are being treated on the ward.
The health officials stressed there was no risk to anyone else.
They said tests were being carried out to confirm exactly what happened.
The UK has bought enough doses of Tamiflu, which can shorten the duration of swine flu and reduce the risk of complications, for half the population.
Serious concern
So any spread of a Tamiflu-resistant strain of the illness is a serious public health concern.
The H1N1 virus has been remarkably stable since it emerged in April, but virologists had been half expecting new resistant strains to emerge.
Dr Roland Salmon, director of the National Public Health Service for Wale's Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre, said: "The emergence of influenza A viruses that are resistant to Tamiflu is not unexpected in patients with serious underlying conditions and suppressed immune systems, who still test positive for the virus despite treatment...

we’re doomed.
LOL
Maybe they shouldn’t be putting 40 patients in the same room breathing the air and germs of a Swine Flu patient??
Just a thought.

interesting. thanks for the info.
I’ve been dodging trips to the doctors office for 6 months now, the odds of my catching anything in the swamp are slim to none. I had to renew one of my prescriptions the other day, the doctor wasn’t happy that I handled it over the phone. Doctors offices and hospitals are pestilential pits of infection, you only risk them as a last resort. If Obamacare passes it will get even worse!
Run and shout run and shout. The sky is falling. The sky is falling. This is the end of the world as we know it......
You’d think that this ‘outbreak’ was a precursor to the plague. So Tamiflu doesn’t fight everything ——oooooh nooooo. Whoever thought it did?

Tamiflu-resistant swine flu = swine flu just doesn’t always work ...
There are a couple of FReepers who seem somewhat obsessed with swine flu.
They actually expressed what appeared to be disappointment when I said I had it and had no intention of getting it again - or taking the vaccine.
They regaled me with dire warnings and stories of people who had gotten it twice almost as if they were wishing this on me.
Sorry, folks....I said it before and I'm saying it now....I ain't gettin' it again. ;-)
That's just a shame! But hopefully the news will reverse the pounding my BioCryst stock has been taking.

So Dr told me I had swine flu...gave me Tamiflu and in 4 days I was pretty much back to my normal self. But what’s this about getting it twice??? Wouldn’t we be immune...or maybe it was misdiagnosed?
Hmmm
Well gosh the main stream and the CDC and WHO tell me this is the worst thing EVER. Why we need emergemcy powers. Doesn’t that automatically mean we will all die???? ;)
why don't we let almost all people get over the flu by themselves....why are we prescribing meds that for all intents and purposes perhaps shortens the flu?.....
swine flu and Tamiflu are big boondoggles of big pharma.....
there is flu...probably is swine flu....
but remember, we were told 20 yrs ago that all of AFrica would be dead becasue of AIDS.....
we were told that HIV would infect every heterosexual person....
rest, vitamins, good diet and plenty of fluids....so hard to remember...
I have heard from reliable sources that once you've had it, you are immune. But there are some flu-obsessed FReepers who insist otherwise and they'll argue relentlessly with you on this. (I just gave up.)
Did Tamiflu even kill off the cough quickly? My other symptoms only lasted a few days, but that cough went on for about three weeks.
I was so glad to finally get over that!
*lol* i guess you are right it looks like we are finished :-) OMG i just realize that i will be one of the
virst victims because i haven´t bothered to get a shot against swine flu. this and now the fact that the Tamil flu i have at home may will not work, it looks like it´s all over for me ;-)
greetings
What???
I beg your pardon!
The sky is NOT falling.
And I should be an expert about that.
